I just went to the urologist and just based on what my symptoms are he suggested i get a sphincterotomy. This is before we've even done any actual tests.
I asked him about a spc but he said it's usualy reserved as a last resort. His reasoning was that the spc can still cause uti's and kinking wich can lead to pressure building up again in the bladder.
Has anyone here had a sphincterotomy or know someone who has?
Have they had any problems getting an erection afterward?
can a scp cause problems getting an erection?

Sturm, I had various problems with drainage, mostly sore of the end of the penis which wouldn't heal so the external catheter (sheath) was no longer the answer.
My urologist tried to get my going with ISC but that became too damp as whatever interval I chose, it was too long! So his next best idea was an SPC. no problems except I had some overnight floods as the bladder as too powerful so I went for the bladder expansion ops (ileo-cystoplasty). Since then I have been using the SPC without any leaks and much more importantly without any infections at all. I think some people must do better than others as they have dreadful times with an SPC. Anyway that is not my experience. My wife and I change the catheter at home and it takes very little time.
now if you have sphincterotomy you will reduce the pressure needed to void and, hopefully, give you a low pressure system. If the urologist wants to cut the bladder neck too, you will end up with more or less continuous leakage t deal with. have you considered how you will deal with the drainage as my be is that once done, you won't be able to go back.
Erections are a different matter. Mine were never great but the operation on the bladder meant that to start with I got nothing. Slowly erections are coming back but it needs Levitra to be reliable. I guess that is nothing so very different from many other on the site.
You might like to think, too, about the drainage. Before sex, I break all the rules and pop a spigot into the catheter and dump the bag. Thus I have an empty bladder and nothing to get in the way - i pop a pair of underpants on for this. now depending how it went, you might have quite a bit of drainage coming so that leakage whilst having sex might be thought of a bit of a downer. It might not happen, and your partner may not mind, but it would concern me quite a lot.
So, that's all I know. There is just one more thought. inserting an SPC is done under anaesthetic and takes 15 - 30 mins. If it is not for you for any reason it is reversible. Pull out the catheter, put a pad over the hole and in a hour you wil be dry and in a week all there will be left is a tiny scar. you can't test a sphincterotomy like that - once done that's it. I would favour giving the SPC a go as you have nothing to lose and it might be just what you need.

Hi sturm
I had a sphincterotomy many years ago because of pressure on the kidneys. Fortunately, my surgeon took a very conservative approach and only did a shallow cut. In the short term it solved the problem but the pressure later returned and became serious.
This time they did a bladder augmentation - sliced off a bit of bowl and sewed in into the bladder, so making the bladder larger. That's a reasonably serious operation but in my case has been fantastically successful. I changed from using an external catheter to intermittent cathetisation and life became much simpler. Much.
Going back to that sphincterotomy, I was now grateful the surgeon had done a shallow cut because the valve had healed and was once again efficient - which I now needed to stay dry between catheters. I'm lucky that in the end it all worked out well for me and I've had 19 problem-free years.
If the interest and opportunity is with you, you might query a bladder augmentation with your surgeon and at least discuss the likely ongoing "damage" a sphincterotomy might commit you to. Whatever is decided, it's darn important to get that pressure away from you kidneys, they are one pair of precious organs.
All the best for you.
