I have total empathy! Stay away from Augmentin -- it will clean out your insides out and won't stop for days after you stop taking it. Definitely use an antidiarrheal agent because you don't want to get dehydrated, and you really don't want to have an accident in public. Load up on the probiotics -- and I mean more than just yogurt. Do this with the intensity during and after you use the antibiotics. Use antibiotics sparingly! They really mess with your system -- immediately and long term. When I have a UTI (i.e. bladder infection) I mix with water a sugar called D-mannose powder (sold in health food stores), which is slightly sweet but not absorbed by the body. The bladder bugs attach to it and get flushed out. I stay away from sugar and chocolate during that time and drink a lot of water. If after a couple of days I'm not able to shake it, I will request Cipro as my antibiotic of choice.

Dear Erin, there is nothing to worry about diarrhea which is antibiotic induced because an antibiotic effects the normal GI flora( bacteria responsible for the production of vitamin B complex and that is lactobacillus.)you should take Vitamin b complex tab along lactobacillus spores and lot of curd because curd is rich in lactobacillus . And dont be on long term Antibiotics because they will develop resistance to the pathogens resposible for UTI.
Wish you speedy recovery!

Erin,
Don't take antidiarrhea medications. It may be dangerous for you. Please check with your doctor. Please also check out the link below:

It has some very good information about medication for SCI, and there is a section on diarrhea. Most antibiotics do cause the natural flora in your intestines to be killed, therefore, leaving one susceptible to diarrhea. Having diarrhea with or directly after a UTI is awful, and can cause dehydration if not treated appropriately. Make sure you continue to drink plenty of water, and electrolyte replacements such as gatorade. Cranberry juice or tablets will help prevent future UTI's. Probiotics, aka acidophilus, may help to prevent diarrhea in the future, but will not necessarily help now. It helps to support the proper immune function. You can also use live culture yogart in your diet for prevention. It is possible that you may have C-diff, and will need another type of antibiotic for the diarrhea. Call your doctor. Diarrhea post SCI is not the same as before your injury. Hope this helps.

If you are experiencing profuse diarrhoea, then I would advise that you ask your dr to change it to another antibiotic. I know that as few as possible antibiotics have to be used, but there is no need for someone to be suffering with the squits if there is another suitable antibiotic available. As long as it is just a common infection and not resistant forms which are more difficult to treat and have less antibiotics available.
Hope this helps,

In agreement with kewlcatkez (good info, btw) a common side effect of antibiotics is runny stool. Check with your pharmacy to find out what side effects and other info is available for your Rx. My last bit had me on 3 antibiotics: 2 heavy ones (both with diarrhea as a side effect...lovely) for a month and then a stepdown (again, same side effect) for 2 months.
The good news is it will return to normal!
