I have total empathy! Stay away from Augmentin -- it will clean out your insides out and won't stop for days after you stop taking it. Definitely use an antidiarrheal agent because you don't want to get dehydrated, and you really don't want to have an accident in public. Load up on the probiotics -- and I mean more than just yogurt. Do this with the intensity during and after you use the antibiotics. Use antibiotics sparingly! They really mess with your system -- immediately and long term. When I have a UTI (i.e. bladder infection) I mix with water a sugar called D-mannose powder (sold in health food stores), which is slightly sweet but not absorbed by the body. The bladder bugs attach to it and get flushed out. I stay away from sugar and chocolate during that time and drink a lot of water. If after a couple of days I'm not able to shake it, I will request Cipro as my antibiotic of choice.

Hi Erin, sorry to hear you are having problems - I had exactly the same experience with Augmentin a few years back, so I would never take it again. Everyone's body reacts differently to different drugs though so you should change the drug for another one - speak to your doctor. I did and now if I have a UTI bad enough to warrant antibiotics I use Nitrofurantoin - never had a bowel upset with that.

Good luck!

Dear Erin, there is nothing to worry about diarrhea which is antibiotic induced because an antibiotic effects the normal GI flora( bacteria responsible for the production of vitamin B complex and that is lactobacillus.)you should take Vitamin b complex tab along lactobacillus spores and lot of curd because curd is rich in lactobacillus . And dont be on long term Antibiotics because they will develop resistance to the pathogens resposible for UTI.
Wish you speedy recovery!

Erin,
Don't take antidiarrhea medications. It may be dangerous for you. Please check with your doctor. Please also check out the link below:
http://sci.washingto...htm#nopreload=1
It has some very good information about medication for SCI, and there is a section on diarrhea. Most antibiotics do cause the natural flora in your intestines to be killed, therefore, leaving one susceptible to diarrhea. Having diarrhea with or directly after a UTI is awful, and can cause dehydration if not treated appropriately. Make sure you continue to drink plenty of water, and electrolyte replacements such as gatorade. Cranberry juice or tablets will help prevent future UTI's. Probiotics, aka acidophilus, may help to prevent diarrhea in the future, but will not necessarily help now. It helps to support the proper immune function. You can also use live culture yogart in your diet for prevention. It is possible that you may have C-diff, and will need another type of antibiotic for the diarrhea. Call your doctor. Diarrhea post SCI is not the same as before your injury. Hope this helps.

This one also hits home for me as I have been off and on Levaquin(levofloxacin) for about five months now due to what they thought was just a UTI. Usually what would happen is they would give me a week of levaquin and my UTI symptoms would disappear and in about a week after finishing the antibiotics the infection would slowly creep back in and my volumes would slowly go down. After my fourth round of antibiotics and the doctors increasing the length of treatment each time and still getting a UTI after stopping meds with the same two bacteria they finally now think that I have a prostate infection so they put me on 6 weeks of meds. I don't know, probably could be because my wife and I were going through IVF and I know I had a UTI sometime before I gave my sperm sample and maybe some of the bacteria infected my prostate. Who knows. I have superman's stomach so it really hasn't phased me until about two weeks ago and I couldn't get myself plugged up for about 5 days. It was terrible, I was eating all sorts of cheese and pretty much anything that would normally plug me up, but nothing was doing the trick. I finally got myself plugged up enough for one day by taking a slow release iron pill and zinc pill. That day I started taking a probiotic that I had taken before and that made all the difference in the world. Usual probiotics are just one pill and have various different good bacteria. I've found one that really works good. It is a three different pill(all different kinds of probiotics) regimen and it is awesome. I went from feeling like I was a 90 year old on my death bed to feeling pretty good again. I haven't had any loose stool since. Swanson Vitamins make them and they aren't too expensive either. It's $15 dollars for all three bottles. I took some of their "signature" single -pill probiotics and they didn't work near as good as these. Also.....I used to take D-mannose, but when you have diarhea it just multiplies the problem. Here is the link.

Okay thanks so much I will check this out. I have another uti they put me leviquin for 10 days . I have been on this med off and on to. My symtoms come and go to. I am not sure why. I get alot of pressure .when I get one down below where my cathiter is. I am not sure why and I always get yeast infection when I am on antibiotics. So then they have to give me medicine for that. Hi,

If you are experiencing profuse diarrhoea, then I would advise that you ask your dr to change it to another antibiotic. I know that as few as possible antibiotics have to be used, but there is no need for someone to be suffering with the squits if there is another suitable antibiotic available. As long as it is just a common infection and not resistant forms which are more difficult to treat and have less antibiotics available.

Hope this helps,

The probiotic source I use after antibiotic treatment is Activa yogurt. Dannon makes it...should be available at the local grocery store. That, and I temporarily up the fiber content of my diet.

In agreement with kewlcatkez (good info, btw) a common side effect of antibiotics is runny stool. Check with your pharmacy to find out what side effects and other info is available for your Rx. My last bit had me on 3 antibiotics: 2 heavy ones (both with diarrhea as a side effect...lovely) for a month and then a stepdown (again, same side effect) for 2 months.

The good news is it will return to normal!
