Hi, hope someone can help... Over the past 2 days I have had bad abdomal spasms. When I changed my urostomy last night I noticed my Stoma was protruding much farther out of the skin then normal. Like over an inch. Usually it just rises 1/4 to 1/2 inch beyond the opening. Do my spasms cause this or is this causing the spasms?? If anyone has had this please write back soon...
Thanks

Urostomy

Seek help from ET or WOC (ostomy) nurses, or the United Ostomy Association, 800-826-0826. Although they may know little or nothing about SCI. If you have a rehab doctor, maybe he/she can get you in touch with a urologist who specializes in SCI. I've had my urostomy for 39 years. My stoma protrudes 1/4" and has stayed the same over the years. How would you describe your spasms?
P.S. I'm seeing a G.I. doctor tomorrow afternoon about my new colostomy. It's at one of the leading SCI hospitals. I have alot of questions for him, but I'll try to sneak yours in. Let me know more about the spasms if you can.
From a C/5 quad

P.S. Just returned home from the doctor's appointment. He said spasms could cause a stoma to protrude. Regarding spasms causing the spasms, he said you should talk to a urologist. He asked where you lived because I think he preferred it to be a SCI hospital, but I wasn't able to tell him.

Thanks Wheels,
I've been in this chair since a humting accident in 1966, I was 12, so I have 41 years in the chair ...T-6 para. Since I had my urostomy redo surgery in 1979 I have had these abdominal spasms, sometimes I get these stabbing type spasms that last 2-5 days straight every 30 seconds , you can't sleep and know one knows why I get them, could be virus or just my guts get tangled up every once in a while. I have extreme pulling spasms that are so strong It takes my breath away at times. I have those everyday now, but only 4-5 times a day. I get these 20-30 minute spasms when I have gas in my lower bowel I think, these are constant violent spasms that nearly rattle me out of my chair, I get so hot from the muscle contrations that I'm all wet aftrerwards, thank God its only 1-2 times a day I get these and only if I have gas or something. But I can go 2 weeks with zero problems, then 2 weeks with constant spasms, Its hard to make plans. Did I say they were ver y painfull because they are. Thats my spasms
I live in Maryland, on the eastern shore very rural no good Doctors here, where is a good SCI hospital. Thanks

At one time I had severe spasms throughout my toursal while lying down. They last 2-3 hours. After my third rehab doctor tried to convince me to valium, I did. After taking the first pill, I never had those spasms since.
Have you tried valium? Since you get the spasms during the day, you'd probably get a little sleepy while sitting. There would be a trade-off, but it's worth experimenting if you haven't already done so. Have you had all the tests done to get to the underlying problem? Maybe it is just your muscels.
I get other sensations before I pass gas. They're bad. I'll be seeing a neurologist for that.
P.S. How do you reply to a message without the former person's quote box later appearing?

Wheels, go a little lower to ADD REPLY" Hey yea had all the test last year IVP, CAT Scan (2) upper lower GI, Scope up butt? LOL Blood everything found nothing wrong thank God, But I have scoliosis from being in this chair since 12 and that with all the operations i had well you can see there might be problems later on. I will try valium but I hate to be tired. Don't have spasms all the time but when I do man their bad and painful. I have been on pain killers they help the spasm too and don't make me tired so I have sort of gone that way at pain clinic, All I remember about Valium is the sleepiness I felt . Where are you at? SCI hospitals where? I need to go there I think. Whats your Bowel routine mines getting off base again.

Look up the website for "Model Spinal Cord Injury Centers". There's two centers in PA and another in NJ. I live one hour away from the the MI center.
There's medication for spasms in the intestinal tract. It really dries your saliva though.
A month ago I had surgery for a colostomy. (In April I signed a consent for a hemorrhoidectomy and woke up with a rectal suspension--the rectal lining fell. Ten days later I had stenosis--a narrowing--of the rectum where the stitches were. Eventually I had to a colostomy because stool wouldn't pass.) Prior to the problems, I used Magic Bullet suppositories every other night. Worked great. Had dyreflexia though.
