I was just wandering if anyones benefits got started before the six month waiting period. I think that its crazy that you should have to wait that long. I mean get real. Its not like you have to prove your disabled when you are paralized from the neck down. That really sucks for people.

It will be two years in Feb., and I'm waiting to hear from SS for the court date for my third appeals hearing. I'm about thirteen months post surgery, so, that means it was about a year ago I got my second denial.

From what my attorney has told me, it's a long process. I have'nt worked since June 03, but did'nt file until Feb 06.

Can't remember where I heard it, but was told that the first go-around with SSA was an automatic "no"; that a fella should just count on doin' three runs at it. Guess I got lucky. First time outta the chute, no questions asked. Was on State Disability at the beginning, then - when the timeline "matured" - went on Social Security. Hope things work out for ya', FOWLERFAM. dealing with the govt. sux dissability was slow ,but wait till you try to get medicare they wait 2 year to make sure you're not gonna die and waist their money trying to live.

back when I applied I had no Idea what all was in stored for me, I had called a few Lawyers and one said that I should have applied the day after. sure you have to wait the six mo. but they also have to pay you from the time that you applied. call around and see what some responses are. I screwed myself out of 6 mo. of SSD.. I quilified the first time through, so I didn't need a Lawyer, But they will be glad to answer your questions (hell they may think they can get some money) remember --- free consultation..... means you have a free half hour to pick their brain. might as well stick it to them before they do it to you!.... Good luck, hopefully it works out for you.

I have to disagree, the Government does'nt suck it's the lazy ass people that work for it. If you go in with what info you can and show them that you have gone as far as you can they have no excuse but to start the paper work. ... yes you have to wait for medicare to kick in but the day after you are disabled you can aply for medicaid whitch the state pays and in my eyes they pay for your medical better than medicare. (with less B.S.)

Waited six months for payments to start but got a large check that covered those months when it kicked in.

I have heard that they didnt pay back pay. Only if it went past the six month waiting period. And they would pay as far back as the 6 months from the time you filed. My mother fought for 3 years for hers and they paid her back to that point. Thanks for all of your responses...........

Hi FowlerFam,

#1 I did go to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta. Did you work with the folks in the Marcus Building on applying for your Social Security Disability? Somehow or another, I got lost in the shuffle there, and had to wait until I got home to apply for my own benefits. I did not even know that they helped you work on getting Benefits started there, I did not find out that little tid bit until like a week before I was being released. It's a great and wonderful resource, along with all of the other disability related resouces that they provide there, I just wish I had known, it would have made things SO much easier. I guess overall, that was my only fuss I had with Shepherd. Once I got home and applied for benefits (accident 5/28/06) in October of '06, Social Security went back to the date of my accident for the waiting period. I did have the waiting period; however, I did get approved on my first go around. I always thought that you would recieve back pay, back to the date your disability began, but I nor my son did. I hope that my post might help in some way or the other.

Hi FowlerFam,
I went to Shephard Center 7yrs. ago. I take it from your asking did anyone go to Shephard that, thats were you went. Did you not have a case worker assigned to you at Shephard because I did and she took care of getting me signed up for SSD and medicare. I was at Shephard for 4 months and I did have to wait the six months but I was on Long term disability from work so when I got home I only had to wait 2 months but I had my long term disability from work until I got my SS. I was excepted the first time and maybe it was because my case worker took care of it and sent my medical info to SS. I did recieve back pay. Maybe you could call Shephard and see if they could help you with getting the info to SS. I wish you the best.

Thanks for all your replies. I was asking in regards to my ex-husband(and our children). His parents went through our local office about a week after his accident and then someone took over his case when he got to Sheperd. They said that it may help speed up the processs since they had already filed with the local office. I was just curious to know how other peoples cases went. You guys are great here and I appreciate all your responses.
Thanks agian!

Hey Darrel. He is doing ok. We went down last Saturday to visit. He hasnt had any improvements in the last week or so but he is doing well. The boys have gone down this weekend with thier grandfather to visit for the entire weekend. This will be the most they have seen him since the accident in July. I think it will do them all some good.He ordered his chair on Tuesday and is scheduled for discharge on the 18th. Then he will go across the street to an apartment for a few weeks. Thanks for asking!

Hello Fowler family,
Glad to hear all is coming along, visiting with the children should do a great deal of good. I know it did me when my G/F would bring her (our) grandson to visit, even though I was scared to hold him at first, then I started to regain some use of the hands. I think that really gave me a lot of insentive to push forward.
Have a great visit and hope to hear more.

Ok I keep hearing different things. Yes you get back pay, no you dont. You get denied 3 times(as my mother did). Seems to me the gov does what the gov wants. What ever mood they are in at the time. I have found out that the boys dad was approved 2 weeks ago but will still have to wait the full 6 months ( according to socialsecurity.gov). How in the world do they expect people to live. even though he and I are no longer together (divorced 7 years) it has directly effected all of us as I depended on child support to help take care of the boys. Its just crazy......Sorry had to vent a little!

it is quite okay, the government can get you highly upset.

this is great to know that he was approved the first time and in such timely matter, unfortunitly you still have to wait the six months, the good side is that he will get back pay.
as far as trying to make ends meet, is the DHS helping you out? they should if he was a large contributer to your income (child support) . The DHS should help with assistance and also give you the link card for food. I'm not sure about where you live but here, I was able to get my electric and gas paid for by WIRC, they paid like a thousand dollars so that was like 4 months. then I used my 401k and paid my lot rent and trailer for 6 months while I was waiting for SSDI my G/F was baby sitting and that helped with cash. we had to change our lifestyle alot, but while dealing with a SCI that is trivial. my insurance through work was lame, all I got there was 100/wk go through every resorse you can, and don't let pride stop you, you paid in to this most of your life it is time to let it work for you now.

Our government, or the stupid asses in the SSA offices piss me off! I got my disability after 6 months....... But I know plenty of F#ckers getting more money than me, with (Bad Backs) but can still farm for a living/... Another with Bad Knees ******* Whoopy Fu#king Doo..... What I wouldn't give to have bad knees@ My wifes sister gets it and Medicaid, Cuz she can't READ...... Give me a Fu#king break.... Oh I already got one when I broke my neck!

I oughta turn in the whole lot of them, but what the hell would a government that misplaced 9 BILLION dollars in Iraq Care!

I worked 27 years after my accident to keep insurance on my family, PART TIME, and I'm paralized from the neck down. Had to explain every penny If I made too much in one month........ BULLSHIT

Tax every car that don't get 40 mpg, low cost (or free) medical for all legal Americans...
