Ok, normally I just keep my routine info to myself but I am having my niece over in a couple of weeks and I am sure she is going to ask my why it takes me so long to go to the bathroom. Shes a young kid, curious and still at the innocent age where all questions are ok B)

Anyways, I am just curious what kind of an answer people give. I dont know if I should just give the answer that since I got sick it takes me longer to go or if there is something better that would satisfy her curiosity enough without giving TMI.

Thanks for any feedback!

That is all you have to say. They do not need any details as why it takes longer than normal.

Tell her you have to play pin the tail on the donkey for a little while in the bathroom. Works every time

Thats actually a good one to tell my oldest niece (she is 17) or if a friend or close family member happens to spend the night (I live quite a ways away from my family so if they are going out of town of fishing or something then I do get family spending the night or weekends occasionally).

The niece that is comming over though is 8 so wouldnt want to tell her either one of them :)

My niece and nephew were only young when they started sleeping over, so I told them that I was going to the toilet/having a shower/ doing leg stretches/putting make-up on etc..I made it sound long and boring so they'd prefer to go outside or watch a movie and wouldn't get curious at all..although, now that they're older they think i'm really vain :)

clean your system out prior to her coming for the visit, eight year olds under stand alot more than you may think. my neice is the one that said the hot dog one, and she was about that age. don't think she knew what being constapated was about. she's 22 now and is raising her own family, her oldest is 5 and he comes up with some doozies.

My niece will be staying for 3 days so I am going to have to do my routine one of the days she is here anyways. I think if I told her the hotdog one though she was just laugh and ask really what I am doing.

I like the suggestion by Juls though of trying to make it sounds like more than it is. I guess I could straighten out the fletching on my arrows while on the toilet :) I have feather fletchings and they tend to get crushed and out of shape when in my bow case, so the only way to straighten them is with steam so I bring them into the bathroom when I take a shower and then after my shower I straighten them out before I open the bathroom door... guess I could do that when I have to do my routine with her over and then maybe shave my legs with an electric razor while on the toilet (did that on vacation since I didnt have room to shave in the small shower).

I actually see my niece frequently as her mom (my sister) and my mom come up to help do some detailed cleaning every few weeks. My family is very close. She isnt into archery, she is more into dance and girly kinds of things, I was always more of a tomboy myself but we still have lots of fun together when she comes up for a weekend.

On a seperate note about archery... I used to go bow hunting (deer) years ago and lately had been more into upland bird hunting (mainly pheasants) but after I got ou of the hospital last year I realized that I cant walk behind my dog in the field anymore so I have started to bow hunt again now this year to get out there. I started turkey hunting this year too and am still working on getting out with her in the field. I have a PowerTrike that I use to get out there but its not really meant for all terrain stuff like I put it through so I need to push it a bit and sometimes need help pushing. Also means sometimes taking a different route than my puppy to get the path of least resistance but at least I am out there which is just awsome!

hey that is great. I go out on my boat and fish (14ft run-a-bout) I need to sell it though and get some thing a little more handicap friendly. I was thinking of a small pontoon, that way I could get the grandkids out, and my neices kids.

I live on a lake and got a 21ft bass boat and it works out pretty well...

I transfer over to the platform front and then pull my chair in. Then I scootch myself over to the edge between the consoles and pull my chair behind me as I go. I then throw my legs over the edge and then put the palms of my hands on the consoles and lift myself up and over to the seat. Once I get turned around, I grab onto the bar on the side with one hand and pull my chair down inbetween the consoles with the other hand where it then sits. My boyfriend has even used the rodstraps to hold the chair in place before too but I am too worried that they are going to give and throw my chair over the edge. I bet though a vehicle strap properly mounted would hold it secure enough though. The platform front of the boat though makes it really easy to get around.

I usually fish from the back of the boat and I have a regular pedastal chair there so put my hands on the back of the seat and lift myself up so I am sitting on the back of the bench seat. I then reach my arms up to the pedastal chair and lift myself up kinda like how I get myself into my chair from the floor. I leave the pedastal seat on the shorest setting so I can get in/out of it easier. Plus its not like I need to have enough room for my legs, who cares where they are :)

A good answer could be......."it just takes me longer to do things.......and going potty is just another one of those things that takes me longer", and if she asks why you need someone to help you go to the bathroom or take a shower......just say "your body doesn't work the way most peoples do......so you need someone to help you". Let her think it's just because it takes you longer to get on and off of the potty and get your clothes back on. There are certain details that even older children or adults don't need to know about.

Why not let her watch a movie while your busy? I bet she wont even realize you've been gone for any length of time.

I dont need assistance for either of these items but I was originally planning on telling her it takes longer for me than it used to to go to the bathroom. I just know the inquisitive mind of my young niece where everything is "why" so was trying to think ahead as to a good and approrpriate response if that question did in fact come from here.

Agreed that there are details that others dont need to know about which is why my initial response started as that I usually just keep these details to myself. But the case of the inquisitive childs mind once I tell her it takes me longer than it used to, I wanted to be prepared for an answer that is not TMI but also not a lie either of why it takes me longer. "My body doesnt work like it used to" could be said but that also might invite more "why"questions as well.

Actually I always put in a movie or put on a TV show (and schedule future shows for her) when I take a shower just to keep her occupied. She will sit for half hour without wondering too much but even towards the ends of my showers she is starting to wonder. It may not come down to giving any more than it takes me longer than it used to but I just want to be prepared in case I get the questiosn of why it takes me longer.

If she's as intelligent as my seven year old grandson, I'd go with the truth without getting into details. When he has questions, I try to answer so he'll understand. "My body does'nt work like it use to before my neck was hurt", he seems to "get it". At least, for right now.

I figure I don't have to get into the gory details with anyone, but I feel better admitting to having bladder and bowel issues, and that's usually all I need to say about it. For one thing, if I would happen to be out and about with a family member and tell them I need to find a rest room, they know I'm not just whistling Dixie!

well on slightly different lines... I get questions from my cousins's young children. "why do you have to use that chair?" or "why do you need canes?" I tell them that my legs don't work as well as they used to, and like theirs do. I had a car accident, so if they ask why...I was in a car crash and have an injury.

as far as the more sensitive topics... go with your original thought, and the best suggestions I read. theres damage to your body that makes certain things more difficult or take longer.

personally I don't discuss it, but i could never make something up if asked. that just adds to the population that doesnt understand.

I like how you put that, my G/F found that out, after she had to clean up after me a couple of times.
