My man and I are going on vacation soon, and I was wondering what you guys do regarding your chair on the flight. Will the airlines sometimes let you stoy your chair in the cabin? I called the airline and they pretty much said we would have to talk about it once at the gate, but I would like to be more prepared than that. We are worried about his chair getting jacked up if we check it and I was just curious if anyone has any words of wisdom!

I know this has nothing to do with the chair but when you first get on tell them it would be much easyer if you were in first class an if they have any open seats up there they will bump you up for free.

I fly a lot. Most times my chair ends up in the hold with the luggage. Sometimes though if you have a good flight crew, and there is space they can store it in a closet for you. I never let them take my chair apart though. I take my cushion off (and if you have any other bits that could come off you should remove them), and they just put it in the hold as I left it. So far I've only had a flat tire. I noticed it was a bit flat at one airport and by the time we got to the next airport it was completely flat. Luckily I had my pump with me and we just put more air in it and it was fine after that. I think it was just a pressure problem. A lot of things seem to be "handled at the gate" though. We always try to sit in the first row after first class on the times we don't actually fly first class. I have a guide dog, and there's just more room for all of us that way. Usually the people at the gate are pretty good with this, and just switch seats, or ask the people sitting there if they would mind switching seats with us before we board. One more thing is make sure that you get a blue tag on yoru chair when you check in saying "gate" (?) and not the same tag as the luggage tags. If they put a luggage tag on your chair it will end up going to the baggage claim with the luggage if you don't catch the people taking it off the plane!

they checked mine in and carried me (which was no fun for me, as I hate being lifted off the ground.... I think cause my dad was one of those mean jerks that threw me in the air, prob didn't catch me once, that woud explain a few things hehe hmmmm)
Mind you, this was in 2001, maybe things have changed, now I have the crutches (use both in the airport cause I am walking distaster) and they turn around and stuck me in a chair and made sure one was at each layover when I went too and from Texas the 2 times I went there this year... But I saw one lady, on the return flight the last time, in April, from Houston, and I didn't see her chair on the plane..... Then again I didn't see how she was transferred either as I was wrapped up in not face planting from the chair to my seat.

Of all the words, of tongue or pen, the saddest, are these: "what might have been".

Boarding and getting off the planes really suck for me, mainly because the "aisle chair" airlines use doesn't exactly fit.
Other than that, the airlines have always been happy to keep my chair in the flight attendants area right in front of first class.
