I am currently going to pain management. Of course the vicodin doesn't work so they tried me on Neurontin but with almost intolerable side efeects. We also tried Lyrica and Lamictal with no luck. What other nerve meds are out there to try? What has helped anyone? Thanks for your help!

I'm still "experimenting" with Lyrica .I didn't think it helped , then I read a post about Lyrica at a much higher dose than I was taking. So, I have recently doubled my dose and I think it's helping. My mouth is dry and I'm drowsy but that is much better than the pains I was having. I think you should read the old threads on pain and may be you'll find it .I talking about 1000 to 1500 mg a day .My doc only had me taking 450 mg a day, (150 mg evry 8 hours) now I get 300mg every 8 hours .I think it helps , but I'm still doing my own investigation and trials. Good luck

I was at maximum allowable...acording to the doc. I didn't look at the literature as to what is max...my insurance will only pay for what is max rec dosage. Thanks for the help! Yeah I def would take the dry mouth over the pain!!

Hey T-Crip, sorry you're feeling bad.

I'm on Gabapentin 300mg three x's a day. It helps, but some days it's like I'm taking nothing. Plus, weight gain is a side affect. Just what I don't need.

My daughter is studying to be a RN and mentioned Topamax to me and said to ask the doctor about it. My problem will be not being able to afford it. I still have no health insurance.

I too am taking Gabapentin (generic for Neurontin) 300mg 3x daily. Same deal. It helps...some, but take any more and I'm a zombie. I have been through a history of other drugs and the only thing that made it help was shots on Demerol in the butt every 4 hrs. I was getting 100mg shots every 4 hrs for 4 months before the doctors finally made me stop. I WAS addicted but all I knew is that when it knocked me out there was no pain. I got to the point where if I couldn't be comatosed then I'd just deal with it cause everything I tried just made me feel doped but still in pain. I get the pain in my right hand and I don't even have any use or feeling in it and it'll sometimes feel like its behind my back. Only thing I've been able to do is bite down and take itPosted Image. Sometimes I just try and put myself in a deep meditation. Shoot, I don't know. Whatever gets me through...besides anesthesiaPosted Image.

For everyone who is taking gabapentin and gets a little relief I urge you to talk to your doctors about Lyrica. It's Phyzer's replacement for neurontin , My doctor switched me . At first I didn't think it was any better than gabapentin, then I doubled the dosage and in about an hour my pain was gone . It's been a week and I have only had a couple of small pains. None of the bad ones . I sleep ate night , no twitching every few seconds or minute if I was lucky , from those sharp pains. A little drousy and a little drymouth has been well worth it. Unfortunately it's expendsive . I wan't remember a week with out some bad pains . I 've been celebrating! I've tried all kinds of meds none worked topomax did nothing.
I just thought I would share this with you all I hope some one will get some relief from trying this.
It's still kinda new so there is no generic yet . so $$$

My Mom takes Lyrica, on an as need basis. I don't like when she takes it because she is SUPER loopy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A few years ago she would get a cortizone shot in her upper arm. That only worked for about a week though...

I finally upped my dose of Lyrica from the max recommended dosage of 450 mg a day (150 tid) to 900 mg a day (300 tid) and felt a dramatic improvement in reduction of NP. I also take Cymbalta, an antidepressant, at 90 mg a day (30 tid). Unfortunately both of these are not generic so they are expensive.

Neurontin is a much dirtier drug and your body will develop a tolerance quickly. I've heard of patient's dosages exceeding 2000 mg a day. Not good. Another possible direction is an anti-epileptic like Keppra. Also expensive with some dangerous side effects.

There is no good solution, yet. Perhaps soon!!! In the meantime keep experimenting -- except for methadone.

Good luck!

I really really REALLY appreciate ALL of your input! I am lookin' over ALL of it! I don't know what igoing to work best but I have heard the tolerance thing with Neurontin as well and it makes me real loopy. I was at the max of Lyrica with mo relief. They are thinking about doing the Cymbalta for me too but I don't think I am ready for that. I think I can try other things first. I am still thinking it over though and thank all of you!! Keep 'em comin' peeps!! I need ya folks!!

My Doc just put me on Neurotin because I am trying to get off Methadone. Though the Methadone does work for my pain I am interested in trying to have a child in the future and would like to be free of narcotics. I'm not off completely just down to 5mg twice a day. (hurting pretty bad) I've only been on the Neurotin for a little more than a week and still waiting for it to take over the pain relief I was getting from my higher dose of Methadone. No luck and by the sound of comments I read hear I might not have any luck at all.

I was also given Ultram as a break through med, has anyone tried this one? Once I read up on the drug myself and found out that you shouldn't mix it with any antidepressant I stopped that one quick! Lucky for my I still had my dilaudid. Sad to say I'm taking more of that to make up for the other med not working yet.

It's crazy how many drugs we need to be pain free or have a little less pain than before!

Does anyone now of any herbal pain relief???? Other than the one you smoke! hehe Like I said... interesting in having another child. I got lucky with the first one not coming out with any addictions, I don't want to risk it again.

Thanks!
