I drive a Nissan Sentra-just hop in from my chair and pop-off the wheels and drag it in the passanger seat.

I'm not ready to step-into a large van yet.

This is my other car, a 1963 Corvette that I've had since 1988. It has hand controls and is an automatic.

I drive a '09 Toyota Sienna 8 passenger minivan with just hand controls/spinner knob. I LOVE it! We have 6 kids and it holds all the kids, plus me and hubby and can even put the chair in the hatch area without taking it apart. The door will bang the side of the chair just a bit when you close the hatch so hubby normally takes one wheel off to protect the van, but he wouldn't even have to do that. It is very roomy, looks beautiful and I am pretty strong so I can transfer into the van without any trouble although the driver's side is easier because I can grab the steering wheel. I had a car before and the only difference is that when I load the chair myself now, I feel like I am falling out of the van so I just buckle myself in first and that has been fine. Other than loading the chair myself being harder, the van is WONDERFUL!!!

When you load the chair yourself, do you disassemble it and store it in the passenger seat?

Yes, I do. The neat thing is that the passenger seat back will flip all the way forward to where it lays flat. I am visuallizing this but I am having trouble explaining it. The back of the passenger seat (where the person behind you would have their knees) is plastic, so when the seat flips all the way forward, the plastic back is now laying over the seat where your rear end would go. If I am by myself, I have the passenger seat in this position so that my chair is not touching the upholstery - just the plastic. I just set the frame on it. I put the wheels behind it. I wouldn't have to flip the seat, there is plenty of room to store the chair without doing that, I just like to protect the upholstery. Wow, this sounds confusing!!:)

I have a full size extended cab Chevy pickup with hand controls, I had the truck lowered and put 22 inch wheels with low profile tires on it. I don't display any "handicap" plates or stickers, but use a parking permit on the rearview mirror when I park. I find this setup works well for me as I can transfer myself into the drivers seat, then pull the wheels off my chair and put the wheels and chair behind the seat. It took a few trys to perfect this procedure, but I got it going on now! Great love to all...

a chevy colorado pickup with a bruno lift

it's awesome...you just have to make sure you can take off your back cushion or find some cover for it when it rains.

being an active T12...I don't need the lift, but I hate scratching the inside of the truck. I also like to bring passengers and it's just painful watching them assemble my chair and this is just easier. Plus, with a truck, you can bring your other sport chairs or handcycle without trying to squeeze everything into a van or wagon.

Subaru Outback H6 3.0 LL Bean Edition. I take apart my chair every time, and using the power seats, place it neatly into the backseat. If you're going to drive a regular car, I can't recommend it enough. However - I don't recommend getting a light interior, or leather. I've already wrecked the interior in a few spots.

1993 Ford Probe. Dad made a deal with me on my 16th birthday: If I could get the chair in by myself, he'd buy it for me. So I spent 40 minutes on a February winter day trying to figure out how to get my chair in for the first time. Come this February, I'll have had the car for 10 years. In 2000 it was hit by a Canadian Bus, in 2003 it was hit by a snow plow, and in 2004 an old man in a Cadillac boat-car smashed the driver door. In 2005 it went from blue to GREEN! And about 8 cans on bondo, and lots of time on my arse with a putty knife and sander. I still <3 it.

Obviously a car enthusiast, Megatrig! A question I have regarding the Mercs is how do you deal with the foot "hand" brake?

Is that an extra lever? Do you just never use it and rely on "Park"? Can you post a photo if it is an extra lever, please?

Answering the thread question: I have a Honda Accord Estate (just getting another as last one was rear-ended two weeks ago and insurers wrote it off.
Old shape (2004).
I've never had more reliable motoring to this point than Honda. No wonder: they have had pole position on What Car? Reliability for the last 5 years and still figures improving.
