I am a t-1 and plan on going to the Shepherds Center in Atlanta, Georgia. I will be going on my own, and just wondered if anyone has been. It will be outpatient, so I will have to find accommodation on my own. Does anybody know of a accessible place where I could stay near the center that is reasonably priced? All the buses in Atlanta are wheelchair accessible, so it wouldn't necessarily have to be wheelchair distance.

well you should be able to find plenty of hotels around there. When i was there my parents stayed at a hotel down peachtree close to buckhead. I dont know the name of it but it was a the best place for the price. They have recomended places to stay there so that should help. You do not want to go any were peachtree in a wheelchair trust me, the sidewalks suck an so does the people that drive around there. Im sure they have a bus or a van that can pick you up. I would call them an ask them about getting around, im sure they got some good info thay can give you. You are going to a great place you will learn more there then you ever thought you could. But like i said what ever you do, do not push there take a bus or something.

I am going there because I think I need more intense therapy, and something more advanced than the local rehab hospital. I didnt think that it was really geared towards a younger spinal cord patient. All I saw the whole month and a half was grandmas and grandpas that had strokes. They acted like they didnt know what to do when I came in.

Thats why I asked why you were off to Shepherd!

So are you a new injury?

Your completely independant so that bits solved!!!

What do you want to do with your life? Work wise? Sport/recreation/etc

I ask this because its important to know where your aiming .. well I think so!

If all your getting from Shephered is intense physio well go to a gym!

Shepherd owns a number of apartments across the street from the center, or they did a few years ago, are these all taken up? They have people there that can probably be much more helpful.

But physio goals... floor to chair transfer is a good one but they also have a great deal of extra stuff that builds muscle, is fun, and can introduce you to new area's of crip fun. They have a big pool where you can learn to swim/kayak. And they are always havin rugby practice and they never minded patients borrowing a chair and goin out there and havin some fun.

Like megatrig said it all depends on what you want to do!

Do you know if you're going to be in Day Program or Outpatient? Because I know that if you're in the Day program at Shepherd, they may provide you with accommodations.

The rehab at Shepherd is mostly geared towards getting you to become as independent as you can be at your level, but they still have an impressive out patient clinic. You can be enrolled in NRN, get on the locomat, do some FES bike work.

The local transportation system in Atl is called MARTA. 100% accessible and plus a 50% discount people in chairs (you have to apply, however.)

I live in the Atlanta area so PM me if you need any more information.

A very good friend of mine was in Shepherd center last October. They gave her husband an apparment to stay in and didn't charge him anything. You should check with Shepherd Center and ask what they can provide. I wish you all the best of luck in your treat ment, drop me a note if you like and let me know how you make out.
