I'm newly para and an disappointed that public handicap toilets are just plain toilets which are too small for me to maneuver my pants up and down.

What do other women use in order to be able to leave the house for more than 2 hours at a time?

Do the spill-proof portable urinals work that you slip under you work without leaking all over your wheel chair? Can you recommend the best one you like?

I hate not going anywhere. Thank you.

Hi Zee - two suggestions: Wear a long skirt and no panties. Use a ball game scoop - it has a handle with a hole in on one end a scoop dish on other side. Is used to throw and catch a ball in game. Park close to toilet - put scoop under your ...and handle is held over the toilet to let urine run through. Hope you find one.

If you use a catheter, just use a longer one (the ones men use are longer) so that you can put your legs on the toilet and drain your bladder. Some don't wear underwear to make it quicker and faster in the bathroom. While others, use underwear that has snaps or velcro in the crotch area. This makes it easier to cath from the wheelchair. Or if you can't get into the stall at all, then you use the cath/bags that are little more expensive. You pee into the bag using the cath, then I usually dispose of the bag in the trash can. It isn't too sanitary to empty the bag into the sink. Yuck.

You are so right about small bathrooms. I hate it too. The best bathrooms when traveling are at Truck Stops. Really big bathrooms. Hope these suggestions help.

i use a male cath and the wrapper as well. make sure both ends of the wrapper are ripped off. do my thang....put the cath into the wrapper and the other end of the wrapper leading into the toilet bowl. that way...nothing needs to touch the toilet.

I use an "all in one" cath with a bag for times when I cant use a toilet. If I can, I then puncture the bag so I can deposit the wee into the toilet, or bag it and bin it <grin>.

Public bathrooms, woo hoo. They are so intimidating in the beginning. Easiest thing is to what Califana said, start with the long catheters. Scoot the edge of your seat and do what you gotta do. Skirts are accessible for sure, pants are a little harder to work with. Depending on the width of the pant leg you can sometimes just pull up a pant leg, and not need to pull them down ( when peeing from the chair). Dont give up on the public restrooms though, its a skill you'll need to get you through life. Keep practicing, we all had to learn.

THere is a few similiar post to this one if you wouldnt mind search the forum. You may be able to find some useful tips.

Good luck.

Try asking if there are other bathrooms. Sometimes the staff bathroom is larger. I tried using the handheld female urinals and can’t get the knack of it. It does go all over the seat. If the bathroom is not large enough I have someone with me go in to help. I use a knee to knee lift and they put me on the seat. I also wear an adult diaper with a large pad in it. Good luck.

Look on a site called Trade me. www.trademe.co.nz for a product called shewee if you don't use a catheter. You could connect a hose to it and use that I suppose.
