This might sound strange, but do any of you get dysreflexic when you haven't had enough to drink? Sometimes I go all day without drinking nothing, but sips for my pills cause I'm afraid of going to the bath room and having to sit in it or something while I'm out (If I have to cath, I have to do it asap or I just go) Well.... I can have my catheter bag in and I'll feel awful. I'll get dyreflexic every couple minutes Once I drink a bunch of water, I'm fine. I just was wondering if anyone else gets that.
I also get dysreflexic if I go to the bathroom I mean like if I go before I can get a chance to cath. The rest of the day I get like these lil dysreflexic episodes.
I'm new to this forum. I don't know anyone else who's paralyzed, so I have all these questions lol. Its nice to talk to people who know what your going through,

My legs get really tight and spazy when I'm dehydrated. What kinds of symptoms are you getting?--I'm not sure what you mean by "lil dysreflexic episodes' You need to make sure you are drinking enough dear--perhaps a drinking and peeing schedule would work for you to make both you and your body happy?? That way you know what you can count on to plan your day. Just listen to your body and get into a routine. Unfortunately we can't just do what we want anymore lol

Hi Laila and welcome to the forum. I don't go into dysreflexia when Im thirsty but when I do go into dysreflexia I get real thirsty and it seems I can't get enough water. You really need to drink alot of water. When your bladder is to full it can cause you to go into dysreflexia. Drink your water and cath on time. Hope all go's well.

Hi Laila-
I get some bladder spasms, or very occasional dysreflexia If I don't drink water for quite a while. It is VERY important to drink lots of water with SCI because it will keep the bladder flushed and prevents bacteria from forming colonies that cause UTI's (urinary tract infections), which for quadriplegics is the second leading cause of death. Urine is normally sterile unless a person has a UTI or uses a catheter, which provides a pathway for bacteria to enter the bladder. Straight cath is generally more sterile than indwelling or suprapubic. Dysreflexia is of course a signal that something needs to be remedied, and can become dangerous, even life-threatening if ignored. Another tip: soda pop is bad for the urinary tract, and can cause stones, so I rarely drink it. Cranberry juice helps prevent UTI's, too.
