My name is shannon im 14 and I just found out im a paraplegic. 2 days ago I went back to school for the first time. Now no one will let me do anything by my self. They wouldnt even let me go get a spoon for yougurt! They wont talk about running or walking or anything that I cant do.Random people keep pushing my wheelchair and I dont even know them. I know they mean well but they act as if im a baby and cant do anything but I can. I want my old life back but I cant how can I adapt to the new one

look i know how you feel I got ms some how and they treated me like that for weeks. If you dont stop them no one will. Just talk about sports and ask to go rollerblading or somthing with them. With the free rides take it while it lasts lol but seriously just ask them politley not to push you and you can do it on your own. Good luck and happy trails

im a quad so I know how you feel. I didnt even say good bye to my old friends before they shipped me off to a new school. Just politelty decline the offers and make it clear you dont know the people pushing you. Strange people pushing my chair seems creepy and uncomfortable

i know exactly how you feel, either tell them not to do it, or this may seem a little drastic but just remove the push handles off your chair, but only do this if you dont need them, but it all depends on how independant you are,
i mean you could try it, and if you do feel that they are needed, you can always put them back on,
believe me, having push handles is just an invititation for somone to want to push you,
good luck

Hi Shannon,
Send them over to my house. I have a carpet that needs vacuuming and a lawn that needs mowing.
That can get annoying. Politely ask them not to push your chair. If they say "But I want to." then tell them that you need all the exercise that you can get. If they keep insisting on it then say the same thing but accentuate it with a mean stare like this. >>>
You've only been back to school for a couple of days. After a short while everyone will get comfortable with the situation and things should return to normal. Like when you have to start begging them just to borrow a pencil!
You have a good attitude Shannon. Best of luck.
