Does anybody know of alternate hand controls that can be used in vehicles i do have a van that is equip with hand controls but my husband as got a new vehical which i would love to drive but dont want to go to all the hassel of putting hand controls in it i remeber someone i knew years ago mention that he had some sort of a stick device that he made himself and he could transfer it into almost any vehical would be appreciated if someone had any ideas or pic thanks

I'm Brandi and I do a little bit of volunteer work at the Shepherd Center in Atl and I was talking to someone the other day that had come in for some "repair" work as he has been paralyzed for 20 years. He says he'll get in anything and drive with just a cut off broom stick. He "says" it's just as easy to get used to as hand controls. I'd b terrified to try it n a lot of traffic but maybe there's a back road you could practice with. I'm pretty sure it's not legal but I was thinking about trying it myself as I need some body work done on my trk and don't want to bum rides.

kinda makes you think....... I am on the same roads as this guy an he's driving with a broom stick IMO its kinda scary

I know! He was funny, he was one of those kind of people that just won't let anything stop him! I don't think it would work for me trying to drive in Atlanta with a broom stick but I do get back to Alabama on the weekends to see my family, I wonder which lucky family member is going to let me try it!!!

I went to shepherd for rehab an i did my driving test on Peachtree rd an you know how bad that is. It was my first time diving with hand controls, talk about throwing you to the dogs lol. How is the new section at Shepherd an do you know if Pete Asiano is still there ( i messed up his last name for sure)

I was also in rehab at Shepherd...when were u there? I too got thrown under the bus going down Peachtree...I don't think anybody could possibly understand how terrifiying that is until u go thru it! Shepherd is still under construction but it's looking good. They are going to go mostly all private rooms so that's great. I don't know this Pete guy, does he work there? My accident was Aug 06 and I just made my first visit back a few weeks ago so I'm not even "official" yet. I've gone through the orientation but my volunteer work so far has just been hanging around the smoking court on the weekends and talking to people that look like they need it. Oh, I remember Pete now! Love him, he's great...haven't seen him yet. I have to work like 6:30 to 5 mon thru fri so I don't get to see the 9 to 5 peeps. I'll tell him you said hello if I see him though.

I got there like March 11th an left May 5th. Im sure you were there when i went in for some of my fallow up's. Who was your pt an ot. Mine was Kelly (so fine) an Patty (so mean) I loved them both tho they were great. Yeah pete is one cool dude. I know he was going to school so he might not be working there anymore.

Are you talking about portable hand controls like they use in rental cars? I did find some nice ones on this web site.

Hi,

Where do you live? I have a lynx portable hand control system as a back up if my car has to go into the garage and I need to use my husbands car instead (also an automatic). Also useful if we take his car on holidays, as it is bogger than mine, and he doesn't have to do all the driving.

Don't go the broomstick or homemade route.

We have enough people in wheelchairs, now. Many of them, because some idiot thought he/she could handle a ton and a half of metal while drinking, showing off, or some other lame effort.

The thought of someone on the highway using a piece of broom to control their vehicle scares the hell out of me, and should anyone with children.

We have enough of our children being injured or killed every day because of an idiot in the white house who wants to prove he's got bigger balls than someone else, without putting another moron with a broom on the street.
