What do you mean your bladder empties on its own? Like you dont cath? You just piss urself? Diapers? Im confused.
Back to the feeling of needing to pee. We all know there is no definite way of saying if you WILL regain full use and feeling in your bladder but either way that is great news!
Best of luck to ya!

Wasssup Silone how are you. The feeling is good news. I always have that feeling just before I had to go, but never got to bathroom fast enough. I got tired of wetting myself, straight caths and diapers so I went with a supa pubic cath for now. I always feel like I have to move my bowels. When ever I am on my trike or in a car the feeling is strong. Then I go home a sit for an hour with nothing. Thank god I haven't had an accident in a looonnnggg time.I have the same thing Silone.. these past few days its really started.

Hi Ches,
A lot of men with a reflex ( spastic) bladder ( generally, but not always above T12) utilize the way in which the bladder gets full and then empties itself due to 'reflex'. They wear condom ( conveen, sheath) external catheters. This way they can avoid the draw backs of their bladder emptying ie skin issues, anxiety and the like, whilst not having to worry about cathing using isc or oher more invasive methods.
Its worth mentioning though, that some men who do use sheaths, do need to cath for residual volumes. The need for doing this can be ( crudely) determined by inserting a cath after the bladder has emptied. The more effective way though, is to have Urodynamics testing by a Urologist/SC unit or similar to gauge how much ( if any) urine is left in the bladder after it self empties.

Silone74,
As you are probably well aware, the sensation of needing to pee does sometimes return. However, I wanted to ask about the discomfort you describe around that time. Is it a kind of "needing to go' discomfort? or do you think it might be a mild AD?
Also, is there any other symptoms along with the discomfort? is the pee smelly? is it cloudy etc etc. It is probably just a feeling, but discomfort could always be the symptom/sign of a Urinary Tract Infection....

If you don't have an infection, you are having bladder spasms. IT took me 18 months to convice the Dr.s I was having baldder spasms. I take 10mg of Vesicare. It is the magic pill for the spasms. Another drug I use t night for bladder spasms is Kolonpin.I can't take it in the day, fogs my brain. My SCI support group figured out my bladder spasms.Go figure ask someone in a chair and you get what works.I hope it helps...Hi again the feeling the need to go lasts for ages before i actually do any thing and the discomfort is felt when it feels like i am bursting to go i have tapped the bladder and this does help a little come out making it less uncomfortable i have had my urine tested for infection and there is no sign of 1 as you say i use external caths so when my bladder emties it just goes straight into a leg bag the Urodynamics test shows that i empty almost all of my bladder on its own i do intermitant only once every morning just to be safe and hardly any urine comes out i also can tell when i need to empty my bowel now and seem to be able to do little or no dig stim to have a movement i can also tell if my bum is getting sore and move my right leg a bit now i am meant to be complete injury but obviously some signals are getting through this is why i ask about the sensations of the bladder as i would love to regain some kind of control over what is going on? I have 3 main breaks T3 T4 and L1 i have been through my mri scan with my consultant when i had my acciddent and from what he showed me and from what he told me i am a complete???????????

Although I agree that bladder spasms are another thing which may be causing the sensations, it is not the cause when infection is ruled out.
Drs have been known to be wrong with their complete diagnoses before now. This is many b/c "Spinal shock" and people taking up to 2 years to get their full return ( some much longer) mean that a true picture can be masked.
It may be that you have some sacral/genital sensations and therefore would be considered incomplete..OR it could be a neurological thing even in completes whereby sensations are felt due to the para-sympathetic and sympathetic nervous system have many overlaps..( generally lower injuries I would think)
autonomic dysreflexia could be another cause whereby mild AD is caused by a full or overfull bladder.
Silone74 the movement and feeling which has returned to you this far would make me think that you are more of an incomplete. Complete severing of the spinal cord is rare ( usually gunshot wounds, surgical errors and near decapitations...being main causes), so perhaps even a completely crushed cord causing a complete injury would leave room for improvement,..in some.
I am sure you will do this anyway, but speak to your SI Unit next time you are there..etc..

I too found out from a support group that these spasms were caused by a spastic bladder. I tried several different medications like Vesicare before settling down with Oxybutynin. You have to find what works best for you.
All this figuring out took approx. 6 months. Hope you can get there sooner!
