All,

Over the years my wife asked the question but always drew a blank however recently I had a go as we got a letter about re-evaluation to try & increase their revenue no doubt but then subsequently Gordon Brown did a public retraction but anyhow I thought I'd call the telephone number supplied to question the re-evaluation but also to push the disabled 'discount' if any..

So anyhow after getting passed around a bit I eventually spoke to a nice guy who has sent me a form entitled " Council Tax- Disabled Person Reduction" which to my understanding is if you meet the criteria it could drop the banding by one level (nice eh as there are not too many advantages to being disabled:-) the Criteria are:

1) A room other than a bathroom, kitchen or lavatory which is used predominantly by the disabled person.

Examples may be an extension or an existing room used for storing dialysis equipment or a wheelchair, or a bedroom on the ground floor of a dwelling with two or more storeys.

2) A second bathroom or Kitchen

OR

3) Extra space in the dwelling to allow a wheelchair to be used indoors. (The disabled person MUST use the wheelchair indoors.

Anyhow, I have just received the form & a doctor or district nurse etc needs to fill in the back but I'll let you know if I'm successful or not. If anyone has any views/experience then do let us know as I didn't know the process existed so well worth a shot IMHO.

Hi Gary,

I get the council reduction, in fact I just recieved my renewal form.

I put my conservatory down as my second room as it contains my Uppertone. I also put down my ensuite bathroom as it has a level access shower.

If they come and visit, which they sometimes do just to catch you out, I show them my computer room which has been designed with access for my daily use.

I've never had any problems getting the reduction, but I would imagine councils do vary.

Damm, wish I'd know about it a few years ago as every penny counts. Oh well I reckon I qualify for two outta three so I'm just waiting for a District Nurse to visit & I'll get her to sign the form. I don't suppose it's pro rata'd / backward compatible though ha

Me too. I applied and got it without any problem. That was soon after we arrived here.
