I have been in a chair 3 years and am getting the itch to be competitive again. I play rugby but just for fun. I can't play in the league because I am not a quad. I want to play sled hockey so if anyone has info on programs in South Florida please help.

Thanks

Sled Hockey is the best sport out there IMHO! Yeah I am a hockey fanatic too, loved AB hockey and thought I would never skate again. Sled hockey has been my saving grace in getting me out into sports again and with lots of physical activity too!

From USSHA website:

Quote

Sled (sledge as it's referred to outside the US) hockey was invented at a Stockholm, Sweden rehabilitation center in the early 1960s by a group of Swedes who, despite their physical disability, wanted to continue playing hockey.

Players sit in specially designed sleds that sit on top of two hockey skate blades. There are two sticks for each player instead of one and and the sticks have metal pics on the butt end for players to propel themselves. Sled hockey provides opportunity for many types of disabilities and there are opportunities available in local areas for recreation/competition all the way to the National Sled Team that plays in the Paralympics. Sled hockey is rapidly growing in the US and players are "hooked" once they touch the ice the first time.

If you want to see some pics of what it looks like, I have some pics on my myspace page (http://myspace.com/doby48) if interested although you have to be a member on myspace to view the pics section. There is an awsome videon on YouTube of a 2007 Gold Medal game of Canada vs Norway.

Alternatively you can go here to check out some pics of the sport. I am not affiliated with this team in any way, just happen to know they have quite a few pics on their site: http://www.newenglan...hotos_video.htm

If you have any specific questions on the sport, etc let me know and I will be happy to help you out!

Oh and also I forgot to mention that people can play regardless of injury level as well. We have people that play in our organization that are quads. There are adaptations used for higher level paras like a higher backrest and for quads (or paras who dont have the strength) they can have a designated pusher that skates behind them and pushes their sled while the person in the sled holds the stick and hits the puck. For some of the high levels they have even used a single stick instead of two as they couldnt grip it and had the stick taped to their hands.

Its played on ice, same rules as regular AB standup hockey. The sleds have 2 blades underneath the bucket that you sit in and they are like the blades you would find on hockey skates. The width between the blades varies from 5 inches to as narrow as using only one blade depending on the position you play and your needs.

There is supposedly a team in TN. I will send you the details I have via PM.
