Anyone else ever get into the car and forget to lock your brakes on the wheelchair. Looked up and wheelchair rolling down the hill in parking lot what a jerk. Funny now that I think about but sucked at the time. :drive:

Ha! I wrote about a funny story of a car transfer "gone wrong" on this site not too long ago. Feel free to read it:

Hey This seems like a good place to ask...what are the different techniques for car transfers,

I have a 2002 GMC 2500HD pickup see pic below, and I get in and out of it at least 5 times a day which is fine, but I recently picked up a 2wd standard cab chevy truck (hotrod project), I have a rigid quickie GT and I don't think there will be room to pass it in front of me (even dissassembled) the new truck also has bucket seats.

The only adaptive equipment I use in the vehicle are hand controls and I fabricate those myself generally. Is there a good way to toss this chair in the back of the truck from the driver seat? Any experience with this might help.

Hi,

If you want to toss it into the back of the pickup, then perhaps the following videon contains something like what you are looking for? ( a Braun I think make) :

I am in prosess of purchasing a ford Cragar f-150 and Im having a chair lift that comes out from under the tannau cover and get the chair and puts it under the cover out of sight and dry. I'll try to find a pic.of the divice. I'm having a hard time finding someone to reverse hinge the back driverside door.
I'll be driving again for the first time since the time that put me in this chair.P1010120wht.jpg :help: :lmao:

Nope those are not what I am looking for...I want to know if anyone physically places their chair in the bed of the truck. Not on the 2500HD just in a little lowered 2wd regular cab pickup. Mine is titanium and weighs 17 pounds without the wheels.

If the video isn't of use, and you want to toss it in the back and fish it out again later, you are going to need to have something to prevent the chair from rolling to the back or far side of the bed of the truck or it will be a total ballache!

good luck..

Take care,

K

edited: http://www.etrailer....ategory_Code=CC has dividers and stuff to stop your cargo ( maybe a chair?) from sliding about a truck...

Yeah I had thought about that I would probably tether it behind the drivers door and attach it to the chair before tossing (literally) it in the back. Retrieval might be an issue though.

I think it most depends on just how incomplete you are. I've a friend who can stand and pivot slightly can get things out of the back of his pickup, if they haven't slid too far.

Me , on the other hand, If I can't reach it by leaning, it stays put.

You might try a piece of plywood, inclined,,, maybe 45 degrees, and with the top edge about the same height as the side of the bed ( so as not to provide a place for the chair to hang up). You could flip the chair over the side of the bed, and using the tether you mentioned, both secure it from sliding and pull it back out when you wanted.

Don't know if you followed all that or if it helped,,, but,,,you asked!!!

I can stand for a brief period on my right leg but without the left balance is not there. I was thinking along similar lines and thanks for the input.

I have a friend who throws his in the back, he drives an S-10 xtreme extended cab so it's surely possible to get it back there, I think he has to have someone get it out though. if you can stand on yer left another approach may be to mount some chrome on the frame between the door and backglass so you could hold onto it while getting your chair.

i had a single cab s-10 in the past and it was/is possible to pull a rigid chair with the back folded down across in front of you and the steering wheel, just takes a bit of practice. i would put the wheels in the floorboard and then chair in the seat and then my cushion on top of the chair. I hated doing it and will never own a single cab truck again, but i did have it and drove it daily for 3 years.

I am a t6 incomplet and I have got to where I stand up next to the truck and load my chair I have a limited use of my left leg so if I open the door and hold on to the side of the truck with one hand I can take the other and pick up my chair and load it

I noticed several specific YOUTUBE videos. Just use keyword "paraplegic transfer" and you'll get all kinds of different methods. I'm looking at driving again soon, so I'm weighing my odds at what might work best for a lower quad.
