Summary:
This was a nice resort and I would definitely recommend this to anyone. It’s huge! The service was great, the food was good, and the resort itself is beautiful. There were a few things that bothered us a little, but not anything to ruin our time - we had a great time. This will be a pretty detailed review.
Cancun Airport:
The new terminal at the Cancun airport was very nice - completely open and wheelchair accessible. There were clear signs everywhere, so we knew just where to go. The immigration and customs area was pretty organized and we got through rather quickly. I took the advice of someone else and held a conversation with my husband as we walked through the timeshare room and did not have a problem. I few tried to catch our attention, but a simply, but strong, no thank you was enough.
Transportation:
We used Auto Xpress (or TRANSTRAIL) for our transportation to and from the airport and the hotel. They were great. They had a nice, newer wheelchair accessible van. They waited for us right outside the doors, holding a sign with our name on it. It was a nice smooth drive to the resort.
Check-In:
It honestly takes about 8-10 minutes to drive from the main street to the lobby. The place is massive and they are expanding even more. We had a room on the Sunrise side. We were not approached with cool towels as others had mentioned, but they were still very helpful as we arrived and took care of our bags right away. The front desk/check-in staff was not very friendly and they were not offering champagne as we usually experience at other resorts. She had my reservation all in the system, but she kept asking me if I had a confirmation number from my travel agent. I did of course and when I pulled it out, she did not even look at it. It was a little bizarre. Also, I asked her to confirm if the room was wheelchair accessible and she honestly did not have a clue what I was talking about – she asked me what that meant. I explained and she had someone else confirm – and it was of course – but she seemed a little irritated. The lobby is huge and beautiful, but surrounded with timeshare people and their desks.
Room:
Room 3115 is in the Chile building. It’s a wheelchair accessible room right off the main lobby building. The rooms are nice and bright and it’s a decent size room. They have a 32” or 37” RCA flat screen TV on the wall. The refrigerator is stocked with diet coke/pepsi, regular coke/pepsi, 7-up, Tecate Light Beer, Dos XX. There is also the self-serve liquor dispensers with Tequila, Whisky, Scotch, and Bacardi (no Vodka). The Jacuzzi was nice and big. The bathroom was a little on the small side and my husband could barley squeeze into the bathroom with his wheelchair, and his chair is pretty compact. The shower was nice and big, but the shower curtains were soooooo gross and had mildew on it. It really needed to be replaced. Also, there is only one mirror above the bathroom sink. It was a little high, my husband could not even see the top of his head. The room has a real nice décor - but the paint they used is a flat pain and the walls mark up very easily - even when you barely bump it – it puts a scuffmark on the wall. Unfortunately, the walls were pretty scuffed up. If someone would just take a damp towel and wipe it, it would come right off – but you can tell no one ever tried and the walls were a little beat up. The sheets and pillowcases did not smell clean, they smelt used to be honest. We asked for them to be changed, but they never did change the pillowcases the entire time we were there. They provided real good Biosilk lotion, shampoo, and conditioner. I have read about the beds being very comfortable, but our rooms bed was not comfortable. It was on the hard side. We folded the top blanket and put it under the sheets to make it a little more comfortable. The timeshare people call every morning @ 8:30 AM and call about 2-3 times a day. On the third day @ 8:30 AM I unfortunately had to get a little rude and ask them again to stop calling and I was not interested in the timeshare presentation. After that, they never called again.
Maid Service:
The maid service was okay. On the first day I made some coffee – the maid took the pot (not the coffee maker, just the pot) and never brought it back. She cleaned for two additional days and still did not replace it. I had to call on the 4th day and ask for another one. Also, she did not replace the amenities we used, like the vanity kit w/ q-tips and the lotion, shampoo, conditioner, bubble bath - but gave us a mouthwash and shoe polish every day – and we never used the mouthwash or shoe polish. At the end of the week, we had 5 mouthwashes and shoe polish and nothing else. It was so strange. Each day she seemed to have missed something – one day we did not have any washcloths and one day we had no hand towels. The only leave enough towels for the number people in the room, we never had more than two towels. She did leave the cutest towel animals everyday. Finally, they only did the turndown service on two out of the 5 nights we were there.
Restaurants/Food/Drinks:
They did offer many restaurants and the food was all pretty good. They are constantly replacing the food as it gets low. The Brazilian restaurant was real good. The restaurant right off the beach & pool from the Sunrise lobby was real good as well. The drinks were all usually good as well. They offer to go containers at every restaurant. If you wanted to grab something light and take it out to your favorite spot, you can – no problem. That was a nice option.
Service:
The service is EXCELLENT. Everyone was very friendly, accommodating, smiling, and asking if you needed anything and did not stand around expecting something in return – although we did tip most of the time. That is the biggest from vacation in Mexico, compared to US locations.
Entertainment:
I was surprised with the stage, screens, etc. It was nice – although most of the entertainment was on the corny side, it was well put together on a big stage with big screens, and lots of lights, etc.
Pools/Beach:
The pools were laid out real nice and they were big. We were there during a slow time, but the good pool areas were always taken by the time we got out there around 10:30 – 11:00. The beach was pretty empty and the set up on the beach was also real nice. There was a ton of huts and loungers lining the beach from one lobby to the other. The beach did have a lot of seaweed, but they were constantly cleaning it up. You can get wave runners, parasailing, etc. right on the beach on the resort.
Misc:
We went over and checked out the new Grand side. It is VERY nice and modern. We would love to stay on that side if we went back. I posted pictures of the Grand side.
The entire Sunrise side was wheelchair accessible. They had ramps everywhere and my husband had no problem getting to any of the common areas. We were pleasantly surprised.
It is a bit of a distance between the two lobbies, but a beautiful walk along the beach between the lobbies. We walked a lot between the two lobbies, it made us feel just a little less guilty about how much we ate and drank. There was a nice little walk up bar between the two lobbies that we always stopped at. They had these carts that would take you just about anywhere. The carts were everywhere.
Again, a great place and we do recommend it to others. If you have any particular questions, please feel free to send me and e-mail.
