Since my son is a new injury (Jan 07) and he's only seven years old, is it futile to put hope in the future? I hear a lot about research and breakthroughs happening to try and find a cure for SCIs. I want to believe in his lifetime (sooner rather than later) that there will be something for him. At the same time when I read posts from older SCIs I understand that I need to accept this and help him adjust and just get on living. I feel conflicted. So whats the general opinion out there? Thanks in advance!

Where's the conflict????

Getting on with one's life isn't giving up hope. The best lesson a parent can teach a child, is to learn to deal with obstacles,,,in a chair or standing up...

Whether you believe in medical breakthroughs or divine intervention, you still need to be prepared for what comes after. Exercise and education will be necessary if the above comes about or if it doesn't.

Teach your child to DEAL,,, with WHATEVER.

As a parent, it's the best we can ever hope for. It will serve them better than any other lesson.

So sorry to hear about your son. No one knows why accidents happen. We just have to make the best of the new path. Your son is young, and has a strong will. Let him know he is a surviver. I have been in a wheelchair group for 2 1/2 years. All people with new SCI made lots of progress. It is amazing how the body heals. Waiting, and watching will be trying. You will see progress. He will figure out how to do things. You will need to figure out How to let him do it for himself. Mom thats going to be hard! He needs to be empowered to do as much as he can. That it takes time to heal, you don't really know yet how this will effect him. Every injury is different, and no one persons nerve damage is the same. I'll be praying for you both...

In my opinion the best technology place in the states is the Cleveland FES Center. FES is "functional electronic stimulation.' I know a few para's that can stand and walk (with walkers) but thats pretty cool I think!
