Hello,

I annoy people by answering posts here :bye:

Seriously, I have two lil ones and spend most my day going back and forth to school/nursery, then at home - reading and 'playing' with my lil one, I have my laptop on and multitask..lol. When they are both home they play together..
I am an active member of the School Governor's board and a founding PTA panel member so meetings and fundraising from these take up a lil time :), I also go into school and listen to kids read etc..

Similar to knight, I play xbox360, get online, read, or watch a movie. I pretty much entertain my nephew nonstop when he's not in school(he lives here) so he takes a lot of my time as well.

When my mom was alive I remember her asking “What do people do?” She was a semi-invalid and lived alone. I visited with her every day and she did get other company. She got into painting with the TV artists and this occupied her time. She also watched opera videos, regular TV and read a lot of books. Yet she was still bored.

Now, as a one year paraplegic, I ask “What do people do?” I try to keep busy with my family, especially my grandchildren. I read, watch movies and regular TV, Crochet, try to sew (very difficult with foot controlled pedals.), and of course read and write e-mails. But I still feel bored and non-productive and that I’m wasting my life, that I could be more useful.

Hi Carole you certainly do not sound non productive to me.
Just a thought with regard to foot pedals on your sewing machine. My mother in law who had MS and was confined to wheelchair, used to put the foot controls on the tray on her chair and operate by hand. She made all my childrens clothes and was very good at it. just a thought, this might help

Hi Cate,

I actually did try to sew operating the foot control by hand. It is ok for straight runs but difficult with advanced sewing. I'm trying to get the hang of it.

As far as being productive, I guess after a year I still can't get used to not working outside the house and not getting a paycheck.

Thanks for writing.

Hiya, I do a lot of sewing, it did take a little more effort at first, I did alot of sewing before my accident.. mainly quilts and mending things! I've now been in a chair ten years, and I've been able to find the time to do a lot more sewing.. I have three machines :D One is the one you see in the picture I have two of those, and I have an embroidery machine. I make my alot of my own stuff, I make all our curtains, our bedding, runners for the table, and of course all of my chair stuff. I made a new leather backrest last October, using nappa leather and for the inside I used memory foam. I tend to make all the presents, cos I think its nice to have something made for you, I make toys for my friends kids and craft fayres. I love quilting.... not just 9 blocks!!! I made a quilt for my nans xmas pressie this yr... and some dolls for a friends kid...

heres a few things... The Rag Dolls for my friends little girl, they have little rucksacks, and sleeping sacks with hand embroidered elves on them... sewing machine with a quilt being *quilted* and three ickle "wabbits in bags" :)
o

I use my right elbow so I still have both hands to work with.. I can still do stipple work when I'm quilting.. my left arm has more reach than my right doing it this way... I'll send you a picture of how I sew at my machines :)

Hello EMS,

Thats absolutely fab - the stuff you have shown here. In the past, pre para, I used a sewing machine every so often, I made some curtains for our hallway (so that the top of the stairs and bottom, which have windows of an odd size, would match). I have used the sewing machine for altering etc, but nothing amazing.
Going back to your posts above, I am amazed that you made a chair back from nappa leather. Did you get a pattern from somewhere, of did you use your old back as a template? I am contemplating making the pushing gloves which Simon has on here. They need Nappa leather and finding the right type has been a sticking point. I also just keep procrastinating as I would have to use a sewing machine as my finger dislocations and tendon/nerve damage would get in the way. Your posts above have encouraged me to think a bit more about it and to stop procrastinating and being indecisive! LOL :)
(Any ideas on where to get the right sort of leather, at the right sort of price? lol)

My MIL (mum-in-law) who has arthritis sews, knits, crochets and the list goes on! She makes my lil ones jumpers and dolls dresses etc. She actually made my Bridesmaids and my wedding Dress. I designed them and she made them all from scratch. I wish I was so talented.

To the Original Poster

I also forgot a couple of things I do/am doing..
At night due to my no existent sleep, I tend to read around things which may have come to my attention in the Medical world etc...I guess I am just interested in it all. I am also doing a couple of online courses which I just dip in and out of..and am thinking of doing another online course which is more structured..
Oh and of late, doing the w/chair service and Motability's jobs for them has been like a job in itself!! :censored: :censored:

Take care,

I made the pattern myself, I tend to make most of my patterns.
Where to buy....? Ebay :censored: its nice and cheap, the total cost of my backrest was 40 quid :censored: plus a day making it !!! I bought 26 square feet of 2mm nappa leather, made the back with it and a leather back for under my chair. The memory foam was a bought on ebay aswell as a bed topper for a tenner.. its made many more things since too!

50 metres of black velcro was 15 quid.... .ebay is the best!!!!

LOL

have fun!!

Days when I dont have anywhere to go,, or days like this when Im sick..I tend to lay around, cuddle with my kitty and just watch tv, play or shop online, play sudoku... and possibly clean up some. My life at home is so boring sometimes, then other times when Im away from home, I just wanna be here to do nothing.

Computer games and jig saw puzzles. My son keeps me supplied with games and my father-in-law keeps me supplied with puzzles (he's retired and does them as well). He recently loaned me "The Worlds Most Difficult Puzzle". That one kept me in my Kwag Kave for a few hours.

Hi. You are all so busy. Ems they look terrific the toys, my motherin law could do a lot better sewing than I could, and I am ab. to my shame I have never been very good, but I do some.
K. If you look in our sewing and quilting magazines. plus Good Housekeeping, and Country Life, you will find a lot of craft people advertising, plus material and wools etc.
Happy sewing to you all

I HATE to sleep! It's such a waste of life for me. While I worked in a factory for 25 years I absolutely coudn't get enough sleep. Now I just want to be awake, alive, doing something. I usually go to sleep about midnight and wake up between 3 and 4 a.m. and I'm ready to get up but I can't becuase of everyone else in the house.

I love to cook and bake and try new recipes that I get from Food Network and Recipezaar. I bake stuff and give it away to family and friends. At Christmas I made it a project to bake Christmas cookies and cakes for every house on our block and a few more. My mom has lived on this block since 1946 and now we don't even know some of our neighbors so we made it a point to wish everyone a Merry Christmas with some goodies.

Today Floppy Dog and I went out in the sunshine with some plastic bags and my reacher and just picked up trash all over the neighborhood wherever we found it. It gives me a reason to be outside and interact with whoever I happen to run into. He definitely appreciates a good nap though. He's worn out and taking a snooze.

I coach basketball, baseball, and bowling for disabled children. Belong to a
board who thinks of things for the children to have fun. It's a great net work to be with other parents with disabled children. My foster son is 20 now, I've been his caregiver for 15 years. His mother died 7 yrs ago from brain cancer. She willed him to me. Then 1-11-05 I got dragged to the ground by a special ed student at school that caused a spinal cord injury at T 12 and froze my legs in spasms. Being around kids that have never been out of chairs makes me happy, I haven't been in a chair all my life.

Apparently, there are heaps of people throughout the world desperately in need of some boredom because their life is too crammed with things they are driven to do. You can read about it at -

"It's the notion that there is no perfection ~ that this is a broken world and we live with broken hearts and broken lives but still that is no alibi for anything. On the contrary, you have to stand up and say hallelujah under those circumstances. " - Leonard Cohen

Hi Carole, I'm a sewing machine tech and I have a solution to foot control hassles.

Singer made a nice electronic sewing machine in the late 80s or early 90s that has a foot pedal that uses air to operate the machine. It's was a safety feature, in that no electricity goes to the foot pedal. The cool thing is that the tube that connects the foot pedal to the machine can be pulled off and a piece of aquarium tubing put in it's place, making a nifty, mouth-opertated sewing machine. Simply blow into the tube to bring the machine up to the desired speed and then block it with your tongue until you reach the end of your seam.

The model number is 9323 and you can probably find one on eBay. I'll be listing one there soon. I hope this is useful info for you.

Between Tango classes and Hockey practice there's so little time. But I've managed to build a thermo-nuclear device in my garage, using nothing but household objects from the kitchen and a few items from a plumbing supply store. The internet's such an educational, enriching place to spend ones time, no?
For my next project, I think I'll see if I can start a war in a tiny third world country somewhere.
Suggestions as to where anyone? :drooldrip:

Oh, and I spend too much time on this web-site :nopity:
