Bryson is still suffering from kidney stones. They removed one last week, but he has more smaller ones in there that they think will pass. His grandma said he had a bad weekend. They have to give him strong pain meds to give him relief. He is also having alot of back spasms, so they put him on a muscle relaxer.
My question is-is it normal for him with his injury (C6C7) to be feeling so much pain from these? Those experienced in kidney stones (sorry!) can you give me some insight?
ALso, can the stones be causing the spasms?
I hate that he is suffering so much. They are trying to keep him comfortable, but in the meantime, I think this is such a set-back. He's probably getting little therapy to get stronger, considering he's either in pain or asleep from all the meds. Poor little angel...

Bryson is feeling better. I have seen him twice this week and he was happy both times. Hes tolerating sitting up in a chair now. I did notice his legs are very stiff and hes on some new drugs for spasms, but thats about all the changes for now. I hope he can go to the other vent soon, so he can move up to rehab and get more therapy.
I took some pics of him, how do I post pics on here?

Hi PaulaMommy,
Sorry that I didn't see this til now. Thank you for the updates.. Its very possible that Bryson is feeling pain at his level of injury. As you know SCI is complex and no injury is the same. Also, if they think that he is incomplete, it may be that he is able to feel pain throughout his body - altered or oversensitised..
Also, it is worth remembering that drs should always err on the side of caution and give analgesics as this can help to avoid Autonomic Dysreflexia (Info about AD click here) , as even if Bryson can not feel pain, his body can still respond to it.
Looking at the post today, I am hopeless with the posting pics thing ( sorry!) but hopefully someone else will be able to help!)...looking at what you wrote today thouigh, it could be that Bryson is having spasms, due to the tightening of his muscles in his legs, and that this is causing his discomfort. Due to Spinal Shock there is a period of time where the gates to the nerves below injury get flooded and reflexes are lost etc, which returns when inflammation subsides. It can subside from a few months, to several months after injury and may be why there is an increase in symptoms. Also if they are not doing ROM ( passive movements of his legs) exercises, he will be getting stiff due to the muscles shrinking back and the strength of the spasm/build up of lactic acid in the muscles ( which is usually dispelled by movement).
I hope this helps and that Bryson continues to make strides in terms of his recovery. The vent should not be a reason for them to neglect his PT.
Thanks again for the update and hopefully someone who knows and has more clue than me will help you with posting pics! Please keep us updated as far as possible..
Take care,
K
