Hi all,

Over the weekend I modified the right hand crank grip of my Varna handcycle to mount the brake/gear shifter to a more instinctive and accessable location.
The original location was on the crank support strut between my legs which I hated.

I removed the grip (shown here in it's unmolested form

and bored it out down to the point of the crank spindle with a 7/8" bit in a pillar stand.

This is the diameter of standard bars and lever perches.

I had a set of bent renthal 7/8" bars lying around. They are actually the only damaged item on the bike I crashed to land me in this situation, so using them is kinda cathartic....

I used mix pack epoxy resin to bond the knurled end of the bars into the bored out handle

Then slid the brake lever on to see the optimum place to cut the bar.

And here it is mounted up.

The cap is a spare (beaten up) internal expanding bar end cap I had lying around.

I routed the two cables either side of the steering stem, looping backwards to leave it as straight as possible.

Initial tests on the indoor trainer are good, but I might shorten the brake cable by 4-5 inches for tidyness sake.

Easy enough job to do as it turned out, and worth the effort in my opinion.
