I'm soon to be married to a man that is a T7 due to an accident in Okinawa, Japan while in the Marine Corps. He will be 31 next month, right before our wedding, and I am soon to be 22.
He has been in his chair since he was 20. He's pretty lucky with his injury...really he doesn't have problems with skin breakdown, spasms or getting around. He is VERY independent...he cracks me up though.....when he's determined to do something he will get it done some way, some how no matter how hard....and when it comes to picking up the house....oh I can't do it haha....very spoiled I guess. He actually is pretty good about doing dishes and all that....Anyways....
I stumbled across these boards a few days ago, and haven't posted anything yet, just because all of your guy's information was so great to read. I feel kind of silly turning to message boards but there are some things about SCI I just don't understand yet, and I am the type of person that always wants to know ALL I can about things lol.
Also, hopefully we will be trying to start our family in a few months and I'm very curious about fertility and things like that.....And reading all the posts I've realized how great it is to be able to talk to people that understand your life....I hate more than anything when people say oh....how can you be with someone in a wheelchair...or oh...how do you have sex.....can he have kids....all that stuff!
And I've seen that all of you have been asked those things also....Anyways now that I wrote a book, I better get back to work.
Hope to hear from all of you soon!!

From my research, men w/SCI have a slightly easier time starting a family than women do (for obvious physical reasons - lol!) I'm the SCI partner and am struggling w/infertility myself right now...I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, though! :o)
Anyway, welcome to the site and please let me know if I can be of help-I'm doing lots of research on SCI and fertility right now.
Take Care,
Ali

The important thing is that this is a journey you both share and the closer and more openly honest you share it the better your chances are of success. Both of you are entering new territory. So there's no point in pretending one knows more than the other. You're learning together. It's a pretty exciting adventure and I wish you success.

Hello Mrs Poole,
I'm in a similar situation to yours l'm a new member to this site this is day 2 for me and l'm dating a lovely man who was born with spina biffida and is now in a wheelchair though he hasn't always used a chair he has while we have been together. We are in love and planning to get married and we are looking forward to having children if we are blessed that way, so l wish you much luck, joy and happiness.

I am T5/6/7 and have been for 12 years now. i have a 2 and a half year old son and a 7 month son. The first was an aciddent. (yep.really! she was nearly four months before she realised why she kept feeling sick in the mornings.) The second was planned and (we are pretty certain) concieved about a week after deciding to stop using any protection. I know I am relatively lucky to be in this position but it just shows that there are no definites. Your husband might just "do the business" without any outside help at all. There's only one way to find out and practise makes perfect!
