Hi I'm in the UK and trying to find a lightweight to hire, before we buy, for a young guy coming out of hospital (newly injured) as the wheelchair service have given a heavy standard. Any ideas? thanks Emma

The only one I could find is Here, but it doesn't look very promising, still, it may be worth checking out.

I know Bromakin in Loughborough sell secondhand wheelchairs sometimes, so it may be worth checking them out to see if they can help.

Has he looked into getting a voucher for a lightweight from wheelchair services?

Regards

Hi i was given a heavy old chair when i first left hospital so i bought a cheap aluminium one thats all i could do as no 1 hired them out i then got the voucher from wheelchair services and bought my own chair and have the aluminium as a spare.
I think the hired chairs are normally the same as the folder chairs from the wheelchair services but the british red cross hire chairs well loan them out thats all i can think of but stiil think they are the heavy type of chair though.

The only thing I can think of is that some wheelchair manufacturers allow prospective customers to 'demo' their chairs so that you can see how you get on with them ( in hopes of a sale). I would think that they would not hire them per se. Might be worth looking into a particular manufacturer and seeing if the rep will lend a chair? if he is thinking of going with them. Its difficult to know what you want/need at first though..

Also when my first chair was being obtained, the wheelchair service lent me a 'lightweight' chair which was a rep's as I couldn't push the heavier ones (due to my dislocations), so perhaps a quiet word with a sympathetic OT might do the trick.....Mmm. Has it happened the 'lightweight' chair was still pretty heavy, but better than the alternatives..

Good Luck,

try to find some that lives nearby that might have a extra one laying around. I was going to be stuck with one of those heavy chairs when I got out of rehab, but I met another Para that let me borrow his old quickie until my new chair came in. If there was any one in my area that I knew of needing one I'd be more then happy to loan it to a newbie. I've given all my old ones away in the past, normally only keep 1 for back up.

Thank you, we are waiting for an appointment with the wheelchair service and will probably use the voucher but until then it's only standard provision. Emma
