I just started using a wheel chair at work and had quite a surprise yesterday. I rolled up to the elevator call button and got quite a poke when I made contact. :yikes: Then I got nailed again when I got on the elevator. :yikes: :yikes: I didn’t have any trouble with at any other time; just this once. The only difference that I’m aware of is that the floor where this happened is granite, while everywhere else it’s carpet. Any ideas as to why and what to do to prevent it? They didn’t cover this in rehab.

Hi,

If it's any help to you, there is a page on the Apparelyzed main site (i.e. not in the forums) all about wheelchairs and static electricity, it can be found here - http://www.apparelyz...ctricshock.html

Thx. The article is informative. I guess I'll be pushing call buttons with my knuckles from now on.

When I am waiting for the lift, I always touch the wall first then the button. Once I get in the lift I touch my tire before hitting the button.

Sometimes thought, I forget and end up kicking the wall....now why can't my leg do that when I *want* it to? :yikes:

Doh I used to get a shock before I was in a wheelchair  Think I might need a stick to use lifts now to avoid the gigantic bolts coming at me!
But have you tried walking?

That doesn't always work though, as I always have to earth myself or touch my wife's hand before kissing her if I'm in my wheelchair, otherwise I give her an electric shock on the lips!

My daughter knows better, she always touches my hand before kissing me goodbye.

I changed my tyres from slick Primo types, to Marathon Plus, deep tread types, and this has helped.

Regards

Simon.

Yeah, but it helps to know it's coming.

That doesn't always work though...

Not to mention violating several office policies.
