hey guys! new poster here, this is a great site. I was really happy to find an "sports for disabled" section as I am really big on sports

more specifically, I am really into mixed martial arts. Specifically the UFC. I was wondering if there were any fans here? If so, will you be watching UFC 89 come the 19th?

My dream someday is to witness the first Mixed Martial Arts fight between two disabled persons, I think it would be the ULTIMATE way to show the world how extreme the disabled can be!

I thought I was UFC's biggest fan! lol Have been watching MMA right froim when it started with Royce Gracie taking on and beating those huge opponents. I watch all the UFC fight nights, without fail.

I'm also involved in promoting fight nights (www.DynamitePortugal.com) - mainly muaythai kickboxing but our events are now including at least 1 MMA fight - our big fight night in Aug will have 5 kickboxing and 5 MMA fights.

There's a paraplegic guy that teaches self defense - he's posted here before...

I am glad to see there are more like me! It doesn't seem like there are enough disabled MMA fans out there, I think if we got more of us to watch and appreciate the sport, the more interested ppl would be in competing.

You all should tune into the fight this Saturday so we can talk about it here!

You're a fight promoter? that is awesome! Have you ever considered promoting a disabled fighters MMA organization? or muay thai even?

i'm a fan, I have been since the start, I had a wrestling coach in high school that was a world champ shoot fighter. He made it to two UFC's, he won his first fight there in UFC 21, but his 2nd fight and only loss in his career was at UFC 22 when he ran into this guy with a mohawk that went by the nick name of Iceman who was in just his 3rd UFC and 4th MMA and had a record of 3-1 at the time, while my coach's record was 10-0-1. Coach was hitting 40 at the time though and only had one more fight after that before retiring from MMA comp and just coaching with a record of 11-1-1. So yea I've been a fan since the start. I normally go down to the strip club with the 20 bigscreens to watch the pay per views. i also watch the WEC on VS that has some awesome fights and fighters and also Elite XC that comes on Showtime, Kimbo will tear some heads off.

UFC 22 was also the one that had Tito Ortiz vs. Frank Shamrock and some one named Matt Hughes and Jens Pulver made their deputs in the UFC. If only we had known then what we know now.

Hey Finley I twas a cop pre accident and trained a lot. I grappled every day. Just found a gym that lets me get on a mat and play around. Its tuff for me being a para but a good work out. If they get me in a knee or ankle bar I won't tap out cause I won't feel it....LOL Great fight coming up!

Keep in touch!

Hi i used to train in MMA still watch it still do some of the training i have started to watch elite xc matches now and cage rage in the UK i am keeping an eye out on Kimbo Slice at the mo to see if he can cope with the top MMA fighters there are some up and coming british fighters that look good i think UFC is having contract issues with some fighters though it would be great to see a union between the organisations and have some great match ups with some top fighters.

Hi Finley - I'm not a fight promoter - I work with a fight promoter on the marketing side of the business...

I contacted the guys from Cage Rage about a year ago on other business and mentioned about the idea of setting up a demo fight between 2 wheelchair users, but he really didn't want anything to do with it! Think it scared him more than Kimbo! lol

Thinking about it, it's unlikely to ever happen. Maybe some form of demo on self defense or other, but a full-on fight (MMA, BJJ or other) between 2 wheelchairs users is too much for any promoter to risk - it's hard enough setting up fight nights and getting people thru the doors, never mind the nightmare scenario of a "crip" having his leg broken and not knowing. In our cases (SCI's) there are so many different levels that it'd make it very difficult to evenly match 2 fighters and then come up with some workable rules that would give the fans something interesting to watch.

Maybe it could be different for blind and deaf fighters, as with Hamill, or even with certain amputees, but I just can't see it happening with SCI's.

Kimbo Slice! He's just a cleaned-up street fighter! If he hasn't knocked his opponent out in the first 60 to 90 seconds, he's totally gased out - like all the big fat guys. I watched the illegal fight between Kimbo (black prison champion) against the LA Cop (white police champion)... I can't remember the cop's name but he had a couple of fights in the UFC, never to be seen again. Any average heavy-weight will rip Kimbo to bits!

"The Iceman"... is this the end of the road for him? I think we've seen the best of Chuck, but still don't see Rashad Evans beating him in London on 7th June.

And what a great start to the new Ultimate Fighter series!

Hi Dave P can you get cage rage organisers to lower the price for wheelchair users LOL LOL LOL LOL
i was all set to go and watch shammrock and buzz berry but at £100 each ticket i thought better of it thats the seating for disabled so i was told on the phone? Turns out i was better off watching on U tube seeing how buzz knocked shammrock out in first round, which actually surprised me a little.

i watched that one on showtime, it doesn't suprise me to see shamrock get beat by anyone or in anyway these day. When is the last fight that he even put on a good showing? He's only won 1 fight since 2002 and that was against Kimo in 2004.

Hey finley, one of the few things I try to catch on TV is UFC. The fighters these days are much more advanced than the early days of UFC. It's still fun to watch the older fights.

Wasnt sure if I should ask here.. or in the Martial Arts post thats going around...
I decided here cause its more active.

My question isn't very direct, in fact I'm just prying to see what I can come up with. My brother trained at Gracie for a while.. he loves his Jujitsu, he also fights in some other style but I dont know the name. He recently moved back to town and has started teaching the little dudes how to kick some ass. I mentioned this post to him and the hopes of seeing disabled fighters, he went on to tell me stories of the amputee guy that kicked major ass... At the end of it topic I told him I would see what I could gather up from you guys about disabled fighting. I think he's genuinely curious to see these guys kick some ass, but with disabilities being so taboo when seeked out he's not going to ask anyone about it..but me. So its my sister duty to gather some info or video clips for him. If not he'll probably kick my ass..wouldnt be the first time.

Proves that old saying about it's not what you have, it's how you use it. Awesome...

Hello All,

I help Combat Zone LLC (www.combatzonemma.com) produce MMA events in the Northern MA & Southern NH areas. We have a fighter in a wheelchair that is interested in fighting, however we have yet to find him an opponent. If anyone is training and interested in fighting on September 26th, 2008 @ Rockingham Park Racetrack, please contact me. Also, if you would be interested in simply attending the event, you may contact me for tickets.

Thanks,
Jennifer George
