I'm C5 quad and live in Brooklyn, New York. I been thinking of moving to Florida to live close to my sister and I have some questions that only quads in Florida could answer, so here I am looking through profiles from groups for disabled to find some people living in Florida with similar injury as mine. I hope you don't mind my questions.

I have Medicare and New York Medicaid.

1) Are there any public transportation for disabled (in wheelchair), besides public bus, in Florida that can come to your home to pick up and drop you off at your destination and pick you up and bring you back home at a set time for the same public transportation fare.

[Here in New York we have Access-A-Ride doing just that but you gotta get like a permit, renewable every 3 years, from the company with your doctors letter]

2) Are there many agencies that provide home attendant care (Home Health aid) to get you out of bed, wash you, cleaning, etc. And how to apply for services? (What are the requirements or procedures?)

[Currently I have a home attendant doing just that for me 24/7. There are quite many agencies in New York]

3) Are there hospitals for rehabilitation for spinal cord injury patients? Is it easy to find rehab doctors?

4) How do you get needed medical supplies such as chux, catherter, dresing, etc?

5) If you have any information that could help me then please tell me including websites.

In my part of the state questions 1, 2, 3 = yes. 4 & 5 see below:

Thank you for your info. I'm thinking of moving to Hollywood, FL where my sis lives or may be any regions around there.

I would be very careful before moving to Fl. if you need attendant care paid by the state. I lived in Tampa/St Pete , for 7 years, moved 11 years ago. Then your only alternative if on medicaid was a nursing home. Things have probably changed but I doubt the benefits will be comparable to NY. Also Ifound the heat/humidity unbearable April-November as a quad, but I knew quads who loved it. Have your sister, or better yet yourself by spending a few weeks there, check out the answers to your questions. They are good questions.

What's up? I'm 5 minutes from Hollywood and have answers to all your questions. Although I am a para I have many friends that are quads. We have 2 support groups in the area and good Physiatrists. e-mail me and I'll get you my cell number! Come on down. Except for a hurricane once in a while Florida is great. No hills, warm weather, no pot holes and the list goes on. I to am from NY. Bronx, Manhattan & Rockland County!

I'm near Daytona Beach so doubt I'll be of much help, I think you'll find Florida is a great place to live but jimwa had some very good advice regarding the weather-not everybody can stand the summer heat and humidity. Might be a good idea to come down for a visit during July or August before making a permanent move.
