On june 29, 2005 my sister and her three kids were in a horrible car accident.

My sister lost her 7 year old daughter. her five year old walked away with a fractured pelvic bone and a lacerated liver. Her baby child was not in a child restraint so she bruised her spinal cord a t6.. she has motor skills from the chest up.

She has started to use the bathroom by herself.. no catheder or enima... so is there any advice that you can give us... and also she has twitching her legs a lot... please pray 4 us.. and thank you for you feed back...

I will definately be praying for your family. It is hard enough to have your husband/sister/brother/mom/dad with a SCI injury but a baby is just really tragic.
It is wonderful that she has control of her bladder/bowel movements...this will really save everyone a headache and it will make her life a lot easier.
As far as the twitching in her leg....it could be spasms which are common with a SCI injury or perhaps it could be nerve rejeneration. I don't want to venture to say because nerves are a very funny thing and what is the case with one person will be totally different for another.
Another peice of good news is that if she must be in a wheelchair it won't be hard because it will just be like learning to walk for her. She hasn't really learned how to do much because of her age so it will be easy for her to learn everything she must to be in a chair.
Again, I am so sorry that this has happened to you neice. It starts the tears flowing because it is just plain old not fair that a child would have to go through this. I wish you and your family all the luck in the world. ...then again, luck doesn't go far but prayers do...believe me it has been proven in our family.

Hi
As you say she bruised her spinal cord I would hope she may eventually make a full or nearly full recovery. She is very young which will be an advantage as her body is still developing. Normally, bruisig will heal, its just a case of whether the cord got damaged will the swelling was there. Obviously, though I am not medically qualified and doctors should be able to tell more from mri scans etc.

Hi Angelize,
Sorry to hear that tragedy.I'll pray for them.
About your niece,at her very young age she may be fully recover.About the twitching of her legs. You need to correct it and prevent it as early as possible.
Is she taken any muscle relaxant? You need to consult her doctor, about that coz if the twitching will remain it will lead to contructure. Is she's on physical theraphy?

Hope she'll be fine and your sister as well.

Sorry to hear about the accident, and I know it is a hard time for everyone trying to help her. Your family will be in my prayers.

I am sure she will find way to learn to do things and I am convinced since she didn't have complete damage she will have almost a complete recovery.

Make sure to do her leg rom exc's everyday, although she can move them, make sure to do the stretching to reduce tone, and avoid any contracture especially in the knees and feet.

Make sure you bring it up to the doctor about the twitching, so they can give her muscle relax,to decrease the spasms.

It will make a big difference in her recovery.
