Streched Vs. Compressed Spinal Cord

we found out the other day from one of the doc's that my dads spinal cord was not compressed from the c1 fracture, but infact his skull was dislocated and his spinal cord/brain stem was streched, is there any differance in healing when it comes to stretching vs. compression?
