I have been a quad for 23 years. I have been using a Foley catheter for the last 13 years. I recently had a cystoscopy and everything checked out fine. Although I have done some research regarding the risks of bladder cancer along SCI who use an indwelling Foley catheter I am not satisfied and am looking for more information. Can anyone elaborate on this topic or point me to a site that would have detailed information?
I recently just published a book titled I Wouldn't Change a Thing.

Not sure where to recommend as most sites that feature research papers are subscription based.
I do know basics, that there is increased risk of Ca in the bladder with indwelling caths. More so, with urethral caths than spc caths. Guess this is because the irritation in the urethra exists in the former.
As for specific facts/figures I have no idea, it could be they do not exist or have no research significance because there cannot be many people who have had caths in this long.
Sorry cant help more.

I can't say for indwelling, but I do intermitent and just had a small growth removed from my bladder that the doctor now tells me was cancerous.

Not to worry , tho,, he says,, cause it's only a small one.

Apparantly there are two "brands" (again,,so he says) and mine is the not-so-bad one.

I can't help but wonder if it would ever have been noticed had I not been paralyzed, and gone to the urologist with "leakage" concerns.

The need for yearly urologic exams has been brought home to me. Please consider it for yourselves, too.
