I desperately need new gloves for wheeling around on my dirty city streets and subway system.

*** My new pet peeve is people who spit on the ground. I have to wheel through that #?@!% ***

I had a pair of fingerless gloves which I picked up in rehab but my finger tips get filthy when I wear them outside. Over the winter I used a good pair of women's, black, leather, driving gloves (which are now destroyed) and my husband found me a pair of small, black, rubber gloves to wear on top of my leather gloves when the weather was sloppy and slushy. They actually worked extremely well for keeping my leather gloves clean and for keeping my hands warm and dry.

But alas, it is too warm to wear the combo of leather and rubber...hmmm, that sounds kinky even if it is just for my hands...hehe. Notwithstanding, I have just been wearing the leather driving gloves, but they are really too heavy and rather destroyed anyway.

Any suggestions? I'm looking at cycling gloves from Mountain Equipment Coop. I really want something that will hide all the dirt, preferably black. I wore a white, zippered sweatshirt today when I was out and about, and the sleeves now look like they are covered in soot! I'm obviously not going to be able to wear my white, linen pantsuit again until I am able to walk. Pfffff....

Go to a sporting goods store and look at the batting gloves I have used them for years and they work great. I ran over a disposable soiled baby diaper one night and that's real Badddd

OH MY.... longhaul ...... that is pretty bad!!!! I rolled through some fresh dog poop in the park awhile back and it literally made me vomit. Now, the combination of those two excrements must have been totally overpowering to the next person who came down that path!! :) :D :)

Brilliant. I just sourced a stylish pair of black Nike batting gloves. Leather palm and breathable backing. I shall head down to the store to pick up a pair this weekend. Thanks.

I use my weight-lifting gloves, but when they wear out I was thinking about trying mechanic's gloves. Another option would be golf gloves. I'm sure you could find a "stylish" pair of those.

:hijack: I now have this vision of City Girl in a white linen pantsuit wearing a batting glove on one hand and a combination of black leather, driving glove and a small, black, rubber glove on the other. Coupled with her new improved breasts (taken from another thread) it is one fine vision :drooldrip:

I am using the cycling gloves, both with and without fingers, depending on a situation. I find them very good.

Yep that drives me nuts, as does gum when it's hot outside, once that shit gets on your wheels and hands it takes forever to get it off as it just strings out all over everything.

I've tried a lot of different gloves and have decided i don't like fingerless or ones with thick padded palms. I found a pair at REI a couple of months ago that i love, their nice and thin, weatherproof, although not water proof, and have leather in the palm and up to the tip of the thumb, which is great for pushing and gives good traction. I think this is them, the only problem I've had so far with them is that with it hitting the 90's here in Dallas for the last two weeks, my hands get quite warm and sweaty. I'm trying to find an ever lighter pair, but these are really about as light as I can find that are still strong enough to stand up to the wear of every day use in a chair.

Although fingerless, I found the best gloves in the gardening section at Menard's home center. They have leather palms and fasten with a Velcro tab for only $5.99! Mine are black and white. I don't know if they have other colors this year or not.

I have a pair of "MECHANIX WEAR", series 3.0 gloves that I find very good. They have padded leather palms, rubber impact protection on the knuckles, fabric backs. They do not fare well in rain, but I have found them to be tough and comfortable to wear.

I found a decent pair of black baseball gloves at Sport Chek (a Canadian retail chain) which I'm hoping will work for this summer. These are them.

Inasmuch as I wouldn't mind something a little more lady-like, a pink and white pair of ladies golf gloves would be soot-black in a couple of days. I've pretty much decided to wear black while I'm in my wheelchair. I have become accustomed to never leaving home without hand sanitizer and baby wipes.

:D

When I ordered my wheelchair I wasn't going to get any push handles ...but the three most important men in my life: my husband, my son and my father were all insistant that I get them so they could push me around. I always say, "This is the only opportunity you will ever get to push me around." hehe.

It's funny, my daughter has been screaming, "Leave me alone, I can do it myself." since she was just a toddler and now that I'm in a wheelchair, I see where she gets it. I'm constantly screaming the same thing. hehe.

Nobody likes padded pushrims? I went through gloves like mad, even started getting shoe leather palms put in them. Not only did they constantly wear out, as soon as you put your hands in your lap you've got a mess. I've got coated push rims and it's not a problem anymore..

Do you guys prefer gloves?

I find that the best place to buy gloves is an auto parts type store. Nowdays they all have a selection of "mechanics" gloves that work well for wheeling.

I think that regardless of whether the pushrims are padded or not, my hands would get filthy, especially my thumb and my first finger. I try not to touch the wheels but they just rub and get my hands dirty. And that's why I could never get away with white & pink golf gloves. I'm sticking to gloves and always wearing black...and carrying hand sanitizer and baby wipes for back-up hand cleaning.

+1 for mechanics gloves. I have ones that come in a 10 pack, rubber coated fabric. they are snug fitting and grip like mad, plus they last for ages...
