Hello all,

I have just been trying out a set of wheels I purchased for off roading in my kuschall K4.

I had looked at the setup offered specifically for the Kuschall by Invacare but baulked at paying nearly 400 quid for the wheels and axles.

I found a site for a shop in Glasgow called mobility scotland and they had these for sale

I called him up to ask about offset, axle size etc and he was able to tell me that my chair used 1/2" axles, and that the wheels came with a 12mm bearing, but not to worry cos he would swap them out free of charge. He refused payment till I had tried them out, which I got to do in two days as he couriered them to me, again FOC.

I found the tyres rubbed so I called him and he said he would get me axles a half inch longer and send me some axle spacers, again, couriered next day and again delivered FOC. Only when I was happy with everything would he then accept payment.

The wheels came with handrims and The Schwalbe Wildthing tyre which is fantastic. It is designed specifically for off road work in a wheelchair as it has a good off road tread but has no grip on the outer edge to prevent rubbing and after trying them out they are brilliant. They roll really well on grass and backwheel balancing down a loose gravel slope they gripped really well. Best of all, cos they are the same height as my regular wheels they did not upset the geometry of the chair.

I'm not associated with this business but if we get bad service we should complain. Likewise I believe good service (even above and beyond the call of duty in this case) should be rewarded.

Hi there Fenty. Those wheels are awesome. Spencer would love a pair of those. How are the spokes on those tires? They don't look that durable!? Good luck with the new wheels!!!
Live it up!

I have those tyreds on my mountin bike wheels.
I like them a lot, but find they mark carpets indoors especially when the pressure drops a little...

I haven't tried them on carpet but I reckon they would
a ) mark it, and
b ) pull the pile out.

The spokes on the wheels are thicker than the ones on my standard wheels. The shock absorbing qualities of the tyre help as well so less shock is transmitted through the spoke.

They look great.

I have to ask the obvious question, are they lightweight and strong?

Thanks for passing on the info Fenty.

They are heavier than the standard wheels, but that is to be expected. They are not as heavy as they look though and so far they've taken my 110kg frame without complaint including a couple of 12"+ drop off's, which landed quite comfortably.

I might get the kitchen scales out this evening and see how much heavier they are.

I can second that they are tough. i dropped off a wall about 12 inches high, and landedwith my chair at about 14 degrees, which would have folded a normal wheel underneath me. these are still runnin true

The wheels come with a 12mm bearing as standard, my Kuschall had 1/2" but Bill swapped them over for me free of charge. If you have less than an inch or so of clearance between your current wheels and the chair, get the longer axles as well. I'm waiting for the group to get Patd's freewheel as well. Can't wait.
