My father had a C5/C6 injury several months ago, he was in a hospital rehab center (RIC in Chicago, IL) for 2 months. As he "plateued" (sp), they said he could not stay at an acute rehab center any longer. We have moved him to a skilled care center ( fancy name for a nursing home) which has very limited experience with his type of injury. He will be getting 2 to 3 hours of rehab a day, but they don't have power chairs, they say if a resident needs to be moved, they will move them. I guess my question is, does anyone have experience with inadequate care? And options to overcome? We are in the process of construction to his home, however this won't be complete for another two months.
Thanks.

You have to get him in a different place. My husband was in the same situation. I put him in a good looking long term accute care facility until he was well enough to get to rehab and it turned out to be a nursing home. All they did was keep him doped up. They would get him out of bed for about an hour a day and then put him back in bed. He got two bedsores which he still has today (a year later). I can not stress how important it is that you try to find another place for him to go. I got Bruce into a regular hospital on the orthopedic floor and it was amazing compared to the place where he was. He was only at the LTAC for 2 weeks and it did enough damage to carry over to this day.
If you absolutely can not move him, have someone stay there with him. I was not allowed to stay the night at the other place but when I saw how doped up Bruce was all the time I insisted on staying. I wish I had insisted upon staying from the beginning. Make sure he is being turned and getting enough physical activity. He will most likely get very depressed being stuck indoors with nothing to do.
It brings tears to my eyes to think of my husband being in the place for even two weeks. I just don't want you to be where I am a year from now. Bruce has these wounds and I feel like it is all my fault because I didn't get him out of there sooner. I also can't stand to think of how down he got during that time. I'm lucky he made it through. When his ICU doctor heard how horrible it was he sent orders for Bruce to get transferred immediatly.
