Wondering how many of you would buy a disability related magazine in your local grocery or book store. If not, why not.

Nowadays there are so many crazy magazines for sale, but one thing I noticed is that I never see a disability related magazine for sale. I ask for them everytime I am shopping for other magazines and I always get the same response, they just don't sell.

Let me hear from you all.

Which disability related magazines can you currently buy at your local store?

Which disability related magazines do you receive through the mail?

Thanks, Califanna

I get tons of disability related literature in the mail. There might be magazines out there you can buy, but if you call a few research centers like Miami Project in Miami, FL you can get their newsletter for free and it has the latest research news on their end. You just have to Google and make some calls. When I have more time, I'll try to post a link to the article that my husband appeared in for a research project in which he was involved. It was an E-Stim study sponsored by the Fulton School of Engineering and facilitated by ASU. The article appeared in the Anniversary Edition for the Alumni Magazine. Good reading and good looking guy in the pictures too.

Hi. Good topic. The only disability magazine that comes to mind is the one I write for and that is New Mobility, and they are as much into equipment as they are life style.

In fact, as we speak, I am communicating with the editors on next years itinerary, and the choices are wide open. If anyone has any suggestions on what they would like to see in print, post them here and I'll review them.

I really don't see ANY disability magazines in stores! I get New Mobility through the mail.

Jetski, I'm impressed! Any recently published articles in my back log that I can locate? I've been getting it since '06'.

Somehow I seem to have got on the list for a free copy of Able magazine which I gather is the bigest UK disability publication. I do flick through it when it arrives but to be honest so much of it is unrelated to me as someone with an SCI that I'd never actually pay for it or read it if it wasn't free and landing on the door mat.

The only magazine that I'd pay for is a SCI specific one and I get that with my membership of the SIA (Spinal Injuries Association) which is at least half relevant.

My opinion..... Disability is just too big an area to cover in a magazine without making large parts of it completely irrelevant to a large proportion of their target audience.

I also get New Mobility and Sports and Spokes, but I get them through the mail. You'll never find a business carrying them because their just aren't enough people that are going to buy them. I work at a book store that has one of the largest magazine selections around, we have stuff that I'm always trying to figure out who the hell would buy it. But it working there for 9 months I've only seen 5 or 6 other chair users come into the store, didn't notice if they looked at magazines or not. Even if we did carry them, I wouldn't buy any from us because it is so much cheaper to get a subscription to a magazine that you read then it is to buy one. Hell even if you only read 2 or 3 of them out of the 12 you get a year, it's cheaper then buying those 2 or 3 at the store normally.

Now, there's an honest retailer.

Back in the 1970s I regularly read the UK Able magazine plus Sports'n'Spokes and another American one called something like AV which was also veteran-based. Able was edited by a dedicated guy called Sutton.

I even seriously looked at setting something up in lil'ol'New Zealand but, with our small population, it needed to cover all disability and illness categories - couldn't raise enough $$$ to get it off the ground.

Don't read any of them nowadays. It's a buzz of nostalgia to be reminded of them.

I'm finding that I read fewer and fewer magazines these days. I find it easier to "read online", and the information is more up-to-date. I find even latest magazines hitting the shelves are out-of-date in terms of product news and reviews.

Each morning I browse my Net "papers", a collection of news, business, financial, technology, disability, photography and other websites. No need to feed the forest cutters!

I used to get New Mobility but nothing I would pay for. I had a free subscription from the wheelchair mfg when I got my chair a couple years ago.

Currently I only get Sports'N Spokes. Good magazine for the concept but quite honestly I tire of reading the vast majority of the magazine most months focusing on vetrans specific competitions, etc. They even missed covering the IPC Sledge Hockey Championships but covered 95% of that issue on vetrans specific stuff. Didnt even make a listing on the calendar page for sledge hockey. Their calendar also 95% vetrans specific games in most months. But that aside its a decent magazine.

I dont have a desire to read much else and I agree its too small of audience in the first place and of that audience you have to broad a range of interests. But maybe in the US New Mobility and Sports'N Spokes could be offered since they seem to be the most popular :wheelchair:

Good point. My daughter would agree with you. She believes that we will have pocket guides like what is available now for books.

Thanks for your input.

I have not found any SCI related magazines in the stores here either and Barnes and Noble would have it if they thought they would sell....

I recieve PN (http://www.pvamagazines.com/pnnews/) and Sport N Spokes (http://www.pvamagazines.com/sns/) magazines through there website subscriptions... I am happy with that... I don't have to drive to the local book store to pick one up they just come almost to my door...

I will be looking into getting New Mobility since I saw others post... They as well are only through online subscriptions (http://www.newmobility.com/)

At one time or another I have subscribed to all of the mags mentioned above but I just can't justify paying for any subscription when I have access to the internet.

New Mobility - for about 3 years now (comin' up on 4 yrs post)
PN - for 16 mos
Sports n Spokes - 3 mos
Sci Life (NSCIA) - about 2 yrs

Of all I've seen - including a bundle at the Abilities Expo 08, Anaheim, CA - New Mobility takes the gold. The editorial staff is quick and sincere when you correspond with 'em. They genuinely eager to hear from disabled folk with stories, concerns, issues. A good publication. Covers equipment, some sports, sexuality and relationship issues, new medical research, special features on famous gimps, and more! (And I'm not even gettin' paid for this!)

What about reading articles online? What sites have you visited recently aside from Simon's great site here. Disaboom supposedly is the up and coming star on the horizon in providing articles and original stories. Have you read any of their stuff?
