Not from wales but getting a Ti chair outof the NHS is a very very rare event, most of us get chairs worth about £500, the lucky ones get a bit over £1000 - the very very lucky ones I've seen with Kuschalls worth £1800, The justification for needing a Ti chair (over say the Aluminium equivalent) would have to be something extaordinary.

However it stinks that we can't get decent kit out of the NHS and are forced to fund it ourselves. I wish you luck with appealing and hope you find someone who's had one to assist your case.

you sure about that russ ? im not that far from you in middlesex and on my 2nd wheelchair voucher
my first chair was a kushall k4 with xcore wheels and ive just ordered a RGK ti chair with my 2nd voucher
i know of lots of others who have had the same ammount as me the only thing with the vouchers is that its your chair not the nhs so you have to service it your self
if you aint on the voucher scheeme then ask about it you will get a much better choice
if you let them get your chair it wont be as nice as they factor in the service cost's ie they service it for you and 5 years service cost aint cheap

You can pretty much get what you want with a voucher - I have a Quckie Ti which I used a voucher for but the wheelchair cost £2100 and the voucher was worth £790 (They valued my chair requirements at about £550 the rest being the servicing). The chair they offered me was so awful that accepting it wasn't even an option. I was assuming that the OP had been turned down for provision of the Neon Ti by the wheelchair service direct (ie not using the voucher scheme). Did you manage to get a voucher to cover the full cost of your Ti chairs? What was your voucher worth? (If you don't mind sharing that info) I know Oxfordshire are on the lower end of the scale with regard to voucher values but vouchers to cover the full cost of Ti chairs are pretty rare if talking to my SCI friends is anything to go by.

I'm after a 15" wide by 17" long but, it HAS to be a high frame, due to my leg length.

Just out of interest though, you have 25" Spinergy, do you know if they do them in 26"?

Cheers.

Hi China/Maria,

I am not in Wales, but am in England, not too far away from the border. I recently got my Argon Ti chair completely funded by the NHS. Due to them paying for it we got it a lot cheaper since the NHS cut a deal with the Manufacturer - cutting out the middle man (but the nHS do have to pay VAT, mad...). The reason I got mine funded was partly due to the fact that my previous chair was an NHS chair which was actually not even suitable for me as it was measured up for someone else and palmed off on me. three and as half years later and a new OT and I braved assessment again. I also made available letters and information on my situation.
In my case, I got funded because along with being paralyzed I also have a genetic connective tissue disorder which means I dislocate very very many times virtually every joint each day (my paralysis is link to this). This means that I was dislocating excessively with even a light alu chair. I got the Argon TI (after a long process and cock ups, may I add). Its fabulous, but I am always on the look out for lighter, since I still dislocate pushing this chair.

My advice would be to get a good OT (some w/chair services have more than one so may help to try the other one), provide any written info about say shoulder issues from a dr (some will take the word of a physio etc), mention to them that others have had the chair covered, and that the NHS pays far less than the "tag" price....
Also may help to get them to get the reps to bring in some chairs for your partner to look at. Then show them how difficult the alu chairs will be etc. Also this may pave the way for any deals the NHS do...

Good luck and I hope that you are successful.
Take care,

K

Cheers for the offer but, I've had 4 GPV's years ago and unfortunately due to my height and setting needs, the don't fit the bill.

The best part is, the last chair they supplied 7 years ago was a GPS, imported from the States, costing £1700, I went down 2 years later as the chair didn't suit my needs, never had, as the rep got it capabilities of setting wrong and they offered to import yet another chair at the cost of approx £1900.

It didn't suit my needs, so the one's who came from Sunrise, ACTUAL SUNRISE STAFF, NOT JUST SOME REP, took all my details and due to previous problems, agreed to put it through ALL their technical staff, to check it would meet my needs, before they went any further, feeling the Quickie Ti, was the only chair which would be right. The person from the Appliance Centre who was present agreed which everything and put the case forward, they turned me down, point blank, as the chair was Titanium, even though then the Ti was only a couple of hundred more. I even offered to pay the difference but, their answer was "No, as we don't want to set a precident".

Best part of it all is, I wanted the Ti, 8 years ago when my GPS was orderd (which it wook 11 months to get to me), had they supplied the Ti then, i wouldn't be after another chair. Yeah it would have had to have a major overhall in that time but, it would have saved them money in the long run.

Couple of things - you can opt to get a lower value voucher and then the wheelchair service will do the servicing of your chair but it's not IMHO a good option as under this option the chair belongs to the NHS even though you've paid for a good proportion of it. Other thing is that servicing will include is replacement upholstery which on my chair has been by far the most expensive item - on my third set now after 5 years and at £140ish a time (even if imported from US) it's a significant cost. I'd still recommend the voucher scheme if the wheelchair service won't fund the chair that you want though.
