Prior to my accident, I had a couple of body piercings. While in the hospital, they removed both my clitoral hood and belly button piercing. At that time I never really thought much about it.
As time has passed and I have gotten more comfortable with my NEW self, I decided to that I wanted to have these two areas pierced again. When I checked at the same studio that did my piercings before, they said that they would not do any piercings below the level of injury.

Do any of you have piercings below your level of injury? If so, have they been a problem?

I was kinda hung up on the Belly ring, after leaving the hospital. I peirced it again myself. ( had done that once before) I've had the thing peirced 4 times I think? How long has it been out? Could just be a matter of peircing the top layers.

I dont recommend peircing yourself anywhere....... F.Y.I. but I will make an exception for the belly cause Ive known SOOO many people who have done it.

Oh yeah, thought I should add in.. I took the damn thing out like 3 weeks later. Was more than I felt like nursing.

They were hinting about the possibility of pressure sores, but at times it almost seemed like they did not want to "work" on a paraplegic.

Maybe they know about AD and the pain from piercing may cause you to experience it. That's the only thing I can think of beside the pressure sore thing. I forgot at what level the danger of AD stops.

Can you feel anything in that region. I now when I forget to take my earrings out when I go to bed, it hurts and I've had my ears pierced since I was 10 and I'm 44 now. I don't know what it's like to get any other body part pierced, but does it hurt if you wear jeans that are somewhat tight?

If I remember my rehab days (yuk), I think AD was more common with injuries above t4. Anyway, it is something that I have never had issues with.

I am a t8 complete, so I have no feeling in that area. Prior to my accident, I used to leave the piercings in 24/7. The clitorial piercing never caused any issues with clothing. With the belly button piercing, I did have to watch the waist band height on tighter pants.

I have my belly pierced again,I think it should be up to you if you want to get pierced again.(unless it would honestly hurt you to have it.)

My two cents...

I asked my doctor once why he never gave injections in my feet, I can not feel them!

He said, "because you will not if I am hurting you, or if the area gets infected!"

I would take some advice from a doctor.

Hi Pikey,
I thought the same. It may be to do with either the risk of not knowing when you get infected or their perception that you may not be able to keep the area clean enough. I think there is definitely a reason behind it (and it is good they aren't just going to do a butcher job on you for the money) and a doctor should be able to clear up the issues for you.

I really dont think its an issue if you keep it clean. I would just try a different studio. I've had a tattoo done below my injury level with no problems. I healed just as quick as anyone else would. The guy who did it was really nice and didnt mind at all that about my injury. He wasnt even phased when my leg got spasms in it halfway through (it was on my foot) he just stopped and chatted with me for a bit so it could calm down lol. Its all about finding the right person to do it.

I dont have any piercings below injury level, I do have one on my eyebrow and one on my tongue,
I did have a tattoo done below injury level, one over my whole leg (below the knee) and some on my chest,
Like Nicole said, its just a matter of finding the right people, I think you should go too someone really professional.

I had my bellybutton pierced when I turned 16, no problems, besides the fact that it hurt LOL. I got my first tattoo when I turned 18. Before I get any type of piercing or tattoo I make sure that they have worked with disabled people. The first tattoo I got was on my foot and the guy warned me that if not taking care properly it could lead to infections and yada yada yada, amputation. But he was willing to work with me and had worked on several different people with disabilities. I would research different studios. Sounds like they don't want to be held reliable... which is stupid because you have to give consent for it anyway. All of my tattoos are below my injury and the next one I get will be on the back of my neck... can't wait!

Get to researching girl and get to piercing!!!

I have a barbell on the bottom area of my belly button currently, had it for years and never had an issue. It was pierced post-injury. Barbells are easier to deal with than rings, I find, so for anyone considering a belly piercing, consider a smaller barbell. I had the top area of my belly button pierced with a ring post-injury (the usual part that people pierce) and it constantly got stuck on my pants, pulled, never healed right, and I took it out. I don't have any tattoos below my injury level, just above.

The most important thing about getting any piercings (or tattoos) is HYGIENE. The place needs to be spotless. Make sure they are up to the current health regulations. Check their reputation. Always ask to see portfolios and books, try to find a piercer with plenty of experience and background. And then, once you are pierced and if it is below your injury level, just be extra vigilant about monitoring it while it heals (and checking to see if it's catching on your clothes, etc), keeping it clean and if it gets infected, take it out. Be really upfront and clear with the piercer about your injury and medical info. They want to keep you safe and healthy and give you a good experience as much as you want to have one.

I too had a clitoral piercing at the time of my injury. It was taken out at the hospital and I never bothered to get it repierced. When I had the thing though, it never got caught on my clothes or anything.

I had 3 frenum , 2 nipple, 1 lip. All were removed at time of injury for imagery, etc. Now i'm back to 3 frenum 2 nipple no lip, so all my piercings are below my injury, however I have an incomplete injury. No problem here.

I had several piercings below my level of injury that they removed for surgery and I miss them like crazy but won't have them re done as you don't know if you've caught them in your clothes, got an infection or anything, so better safe than sorry xx

taking care of wise I would be more nervous about the bellybutton, since more likely than not you are sitting all day.

Might be a pain in the ass to clean your lip ring with one hand, but mine was a pain in the ass regardless. your mileage may vary ;)

I dont have any piercings, just a couple of tatts

Where I dont have feelings is below the knee
I've cut my feet and cut my legs and not known anything untile, "hey Dave you bleeding"

So it's not a case of thinking the rings won't get cought
Think what may happen if they do get cought

Don't forget those shitting accidents we all get from time to time, loose shit contains body acids as well as sticky brown stuff

Everybody has to come to thier own decisions, just give it some thought

I had a belly button piercing, clit and 3 bars in my pubic mound that they took out and I wouldn't say it was safe to get them redone as I can't feel the area and may accidentally rip them out or something.
