Hey everyone,

I found out about this forum through the magic of Yahoo! and hope to be a contributing member. I'm a recent SCI from a motorcycle accident, and a T-6 Complete. Thankfully, I was wearing my helmet and all my safety gear...but doom to the guy for not paying attention to the road and talking on his cell phone.

Anyhow, I'm looking around for some general info. as to who might be here that's in the Chicago area that would know of any support groups or people like myself with an SCI that I could meet with to have others to talk to and process this major life-changing event.

Thanks for listening, and hope to get to know you all soon.

Darwin

I was the victim of an idiot driver myself. A guy in a jeep didn't think it necessary to look both ways before pulling out. Ouch. Welcome aboard.

Flyer,
The best part of posting problems and such here is, you can seemingly say anything you want and don't have to look at our shocked and dismayed reactions. All this, and without any clothes on. Or is that just me?--oops

Welcome! You've come to a good place. The right one, if I may be so bold.

Welcome!

Oh, I think it's more than just you, Q. But, I hasten to add, it's not me: I'm Irish, and far too prudish for that kind of carry on.

Hey everyone.

Love the initial welcomes and open armed hugs. A little about me, and what some of my goals are now in this life transition:

- Reservist in the Navy...TRICARE Reserve Select's wonderful to pay for my medical stuff. Never knew that this would be so expensive, so I'm glad to have someone help out with the bills.

- Was a caregiver to my dad, but now the goal is to learn to manage myself in the first year. Still going to outpatient therapy over at Marianjoy Rehab in Wheaton, then I'll sign up for the Driver's Ed program there, too. :specool:

- Would like to get into Federal Employment, using the points I get for being a veteran, but not sure if my paraplegia would be considered a service-connected disability...any advice/tips here E-Dog???

- I've got a military clearance, so the hope is to get into Federal Employment, use the 12 plus years I have in the Navy, trade up with the Federal Service, and use that towards retirement, and also take advantage of the good insurance programs available in the government.

- Learning more about Adobe and CS3, and would like to get into Flash/Actionscript programing if that's where life and the Lord would let me go.

- I still like to be active and be in sports...so any thoughts as to where I would go to take part in athletics...specifically wheelchair racing...and points of contact in the Chicago area would be a big THANK YOU from me.

- Where do I go to to find accessible gyms in the Chicago area?

Thanks in advance for the help, and advanced apologies if the info. is on the site, but I was too eager to put out the questions here before I forget. :drive:

The Paralyzed Veterans of America can tell you if you are connected or not. Did it happen while on a base? Active duty at the time etc. If you can remain in the employ of the government it might be of great benifit to you. I'm not sure though. The nearest VA hospital will have resources you need to answer any and all questions you may have.
I'll tell you one thing's fer sure.
You seem to have a great f*@king attitude for a new SCI and that's gonna be what keeps you sane for the next little while. Cling to that sense of humor like a pitbull on crack my boy. It'll do ya good in the months coming.

Keep coming back,
