When my attendant puts my condom on in the morning, everything looks fine and dandy. But as the day progresses, the penis retracts, and thus the condom has nothing to stick to, and the walls of the condom stick together.

Can anyone give me some help as to what I may need to do. One urologist suggested inserting a prosthesis in the shaft, but that seems an extreme solution
Thanks-
Larry

Hi Jon,
my son & I have just read your post. He suggests trying for a semi-erection as many times as required before the penis retracts too much. :dunno: Good luck. :H2kOther (26):

Is it cold where you live? Perhaps the shower water is warmer and as things cool down things shrink. Maybe your assistant is just really hot too. :H2kOther (26): Seriously though, do you use the foam strap that comes with some catheters? Perhaps you could even warm up your catheters to make the adhesive more pliable (if yours have adhesive) or use a bit of tape if that helped. Make sure the bag isn't straining on the tube too, that won't help.
Hopefully that helps, it has been a while since I used a catheter now.
Good luck.

Make sure your penis is really dry before you put the condom on!

Try more frequent voiding. It may be to do with a filling bladder.

You've had plenty of advice from our trusty team, plus Professor Nomis himself.. :H2kOther (26):

It could be the type of Condom/Sheath you use, which isn't adhesive enough to deal with the penis shrinkage. I agree with Nomis, penis shrinkage is often caused by your bladder being too full, so you may not be draining as well as you should.

I use a very strong self adhesive Condom/Sheath, which I never have trouble with; I've had problems in the past with other types.

You didn't give much detail as to the type of Condom/Sheath you use, so maybe you could reply with that information.

Put some talcum powder through the top of the sheath after you have put it on, shake out the execess, should help stop the walls sticking. :)

Thanks..but actually the condom is filled when it is put on. It's during the day as the penis retracts. Plus, I don't want to introduce an element that could compromise the rest of the condom sticking.

Basically, when the penis retracts, all that is left sticking is a small bit of the shaft, and the tape that is taped to the base.

Thanks for your input, though.

Actually...it's Larry...not Jon. I don't quite understand this suggestion. "try for a semi-erection... before the penis retracts too much"? When putting the condom on? "as many times"? when?

Sunny southern california.

no problem with the shower water, seeing how I usually get sponge baths in bed.

I use strong Nexxcare tape. No foam strap comes with the condoms.

I've adjusted the tube for the leg bag. It was too long at one point, which made the condom kink up on itself. It looks fine now..but mabye we should cut it a little longer??? I'm not sure if that's causing "straining". Good thought though.

Well...i'm voiding a lot as it is. I'm emptying my filling bag on and off throughout the day.

I'm using the Conveen Intermediate. I've switched condoms a few times because of leaks. I used to be "large", but a couple years ago I had condoms coming off and thought it was cause of size shrinking (getting older). I switched down to intermediate, and it seemed to worked good.

Which "very strong self adhesive Condom/Sheath" do you use??

Oh...one thing I neglected to mention, the penis seems to regress in to my testicle. If I try to manipulate it back in to place, it can be seen bulging the testicle wall.

I use a sigle wrap of 1 inch surgical tape, wrapped around the shaft a bit behind the head,,, snug but not disturbingly so.

I also use a skin prep,,,makes the adhesive adher better,,, make sure the skin is absolutly dry before hand.

Works for me,,, good luck.

There are some glues out there that when you get shrinkage, the glue will stick to the inside of the rubber, causing a blockage for the urine to flow to the leg bag. This sounds like the problem you have been having.

Myself I use Uro-Bond III. It is a brush on Silicone skin adhesive. It will cost a bit more that most glues, but for me I'd rather pay a few bucks extra than have a condom break when out with friends or even worse on a date.... Not that I date anymore as I am married. :poo:

Ok my bf had this same exact problem. I even posted the same post. I found my own solution. You can find it at vitalitymedical.com Its called uro-bond. It is a skin adhesive. Even if your penis is playing peek-a-boo it stays on. Now be sure to buy some adhesive remover as well. I buy detach its in a clear bottle and the solution is a pinkish orange. You can find it there as well.
We swear by it! Now sometimes it does come off. But hardley! Its a bit pricey I think. It runs $30 for a 3 oz bottle of glue and the detach is only $11 or $12 But the glue last us about a month in a half and the remover lasts quite a while since you only use a lil bit.

Try it I promise you will love it!

Hi!!

I had some problems with my conveen,s but now i use OPTIMA---cnveens/coloplast.It is an excellent product where even the sticky part that touches together(sticks) doesnt matter and it still flow's frequently.

It was like a breath of fresh air once i started using these especially after using the shite ones in hospital.

p.s..dont be unraveling it a little bit before you roll it on either mate!!

If you ring them they will send you some free sampes!!

Alright folks, thanks for all your wonderful suggestions. As it turns out... the problem wasn't "medical", but I just needed to try different condoms. The ones I had been using had the adhesive down at the base. I got the Rochester and was particularly happy with the Wide Band type. Pop On seemed a bit too short for my confidence.

Thanks for all your help.

Dryly yours,
larry

Christ doctors are to much. Easy for them to say, "Stck a prosthesis in your penis", are they nuts. Only if it is the last resort would you do that. Try the Uro-bond. That stuff works wonders. I've been using it for years, and I have yet to have the condom fall off.

Cheers

I was'nt going to have a prostesis put in my penis - I Think that's the other guy - Me?? My Johnson has'nt been the same since my surgery nov 5th - 2 weeks with the catheter in while recovering - they took it out, I was voiding, things looked ok till the next day when I had a bleed out - they said drink, this happens, So I did & Peed Red all week till thanksgiving when I was passing coagulated blood, wound up in the er, flushed for an hour - was admitted - Cath back in till Dec 7th & then Boom, on the Dec 10th I had a Big Bleed out that put 600 mostly blood in my leg bag & a ambulance ride to the er, cath back in & 2 days in the icu with 2 units of blood - UGH!!!!! then Released Dec 17th - Till the cath slipped out dec 29th. - This was my nightmare I Never fully recovered from penis wise as I now retract a lot when I never did before & I Can't get an erection anymore but hope I recover there.....

OK, So. I Now Use, have to use the urocare silicone glue but Its STRONG!! Stuff & my brother who's a nurse puts them on excellently!!!!!!! Its just the Taking it off/ Removing part that is rough on my penis -
So I Ask - How do You or the others deal with these situations??? Do you dilute this Strong glue with the thinner??? & Do you use wipes or anything to remove the condom cath???? I'd really like some feedback on the methods of others - Both when applying & Removing or even thinning it out with thinner???

Thanks for reading & I Hope I did'nt cross the TMI Line....

My husband had the same problem!! It's frustrating. We tried every suggestion out there and then finally decided to go get the suprapubic tube. We were even using Benzoin to make it extremely sticky for them to stay on and it still didn't work. The suprapubic was a good decision.

I had the same problem a while ago during the winter holidays. But like Geezer, I tried out the Coloplast Optima and it pretty much solved the problem. The adhesive for that thing is pretty strong despite any retractions (but not strong enough to be impossible to remove -- a little warm water does the trick). I used to have to wear diapers as a "back-up" in case the condom gets knocked off, but ever since I switched, I've been able to use regular underwear.

Some places don't carry the Optima yet, apparently, and carry the Coloplast Freedom instead. That one's workable as well but the Optima's biggest advantage over the Freedom is that the Freedom's tube (that leads to the legbag tube) is accordian-like, whereas the Freedom's is smooth, which can lead to "kinking." I used to use the Freedom and whenever I transfered from my wheelchair to another surface, I had to be so careful about not twisting the tube in a way that it kinks. I don't have to think too much about that for the Optima.

I suggest using Hollister extended wear catheters , those work and stick to the Penis very well , I have been using them for more than 10 years and never had a problem with the catheters themselves , they have several versions of the adhesive condom catheters and the extended wear once seem to work well.

OK, folks.....here's your solution; First, I've used the same old crappy Urocare caths with messy Skinbond cement for 30 years and always had to worry about it leaking, popping off, sleeping in soaked sheets, dripping on people's floors, the works. Skinbond makes a big mess as well and I was always getting my pubes yanked out. Good thing I can't feel it!

About a year ago I discovered Freedom Clear LS made by Coloplast. See http://www.mentorcatheter.com/external-cat...ls-p192481.html.

The adhesive on the rubber sticks for days; I change them every other day for health reasons but they would stay on longer. I haven't had one leak yet. Literally has changed my life not worrying all the time about it leaking.

Any body else having problems with skin coming off with the condom? Makes me afraid to put the next one on.

I also have no luck in keeping them on for more than 16 hours or so,,, unless I use the ones with the double sided tape,,, but then there's the skin thing again.

Thanks-
Larry

Hi this is very difficult to describe in words, basically if you lie on your back the "meat" (Penis) retracts into itself.
1. Lie on your side, (Or if you have a standing frame, Upright) that way you get enough "meat" to grab hold of.
2. Hold the condom in the tips of your fingers in one hand, with the outlet pointing down to your palm.
3. With the condom grasp the tip of the penis and pull out as much as you can, keeping hold, with the other hand roll on the condom, if its a self adhesive then give it a squeeze.

Let me know how you go

Like I stated above, try the Freedom Clear LS made by Coloplast. See http://www.mentorcat...ls-p192481.html.

I had all of the same problems; the retraction, the catheter sticking to itself and then backing up; For years I used the messy skin bond cement which just made a frikkin' mess; my pubes glued together, glue patches on my legs, etc. Happily, I can't say that I've ever experienced the problem with skin coming off with the catheter....ouch!

This Freedom Clear LS has been like a miracle. Absolutely problem free and when we peel it off every other day and it's still sticking fine. I found the trick with these is, after it's rolled down over the shaft, my wife grips it tightly and holds for about 10 seconds. I think the heat from her hand helps activate the glue or allows it to dry or something. Whatever it is, it holds perfectly and there is no retraction. Also, it's important to make sure that your pecker is completely dry and if its washed off prior, make sure your using a clean washcloth. The slightest amount of soap will cause the glue not to stick. And never use wipes or anything with aloe. Figured that out after about 4 days, 10 condom caths and as many changes of pants.

Shave penis while showering/bathing to remove any hairs/dead skin
After bath, wipe with 91% isopropyl alcohol and dry to remove any soap residue/oils
I use Rochester Ultraflex which is available in different diameters and adhesive lenghts - try diff ones til you find the best fit
