Just out of curiosity, are there any other members on this board that still have a trach, but are without a ventilator--and if so how long have you've been without your ventilator?

I have been off the ventilator for almost 13 years, but still need a trach, for suctioning, as well as a Bi-pap Machine at night. What about you guys/gals?

Kevin I did for several mos. after my accident. I was on the vent for about 3 mos. because of pneumonia. As soon as I could swallow without aspirating, they took out the trach. I learned some good coughing techniques, and there was no medical reason to leave it in. Have they ever considered removing it?

When I was originally hospitalized, my trach was removed. However, within a few days a mucous plug collapsed my lung and I almost died putting the trach back in (I was on heparin at the time).

Considering I need my lungs suctioned at least 4-5 times a day, I don't see the trach coming out any time soon.
