Curious... it has been three and a half days since i had a bowl movement. Despite taking stool softeners and an enema, still nothing. I have been in the wheelchair for 6 years now. This is the longest I have gone without a bowl movement. I normally go ever 2 days sometimes 3, but never more than that. I am starting to get worried should I be. I have even put on a glove and went up there to check. There was nothing up there.

Happens to me all the time,,,, after a landslide bm that is. Sometimes it's a week or more before I get going again.

If it's unusual,,,, for you,,,, you might want to call your doctor. If his practice is SCI-smart,, even one of the nurses may be able to allay your worries.

Wishing you,,,SMOOTH MOVES,,,

I'm sure it will be fine but may measure 6.5 on the Richter scale when it does happen...

Diet plays a big part in that department plus plenty of fluids.

Too much medication can cause more harm than good.

No need to post that its happened, as everyones different so don't worry too much until its been a lot longer than a week; then see a Dr.

I didn't go for 8 days when I was in Sheffield S U; it was a change in diet and water and the Dr's weren't too worried. I was fine once I got back home.

hey

remember your bowel likes clockwork

so once your bowel gets used to a routine (say Monday Wednesday friday)

after a while it will know it goes mon, wed, fri and it will work on them days

beware 1 if you try to do your bowels on a different day you could stuff ur routine and hhave to start getting your bowel back into a a routine again

its annoying because when ur bowel is working fine u change 1 day and it takes 4-6 weeks to get it working properly again

Ooooh No!! Have to beg to differ here - I work hard to ensure I'm not restricted by having to do the bowel thing at set times or days. I need the flexibility to change things round to suit my life not having to run my life around my bowels. I can confidently go any time between 36hrs and 72 hrs between - Things like how successful the last go was, how much I've eaten and how much I've exercised affect things but you get to know this through experience, I now have a lot more confidence to leave it longer than I used to but sitting on the throne unsuccessfully is better than having an accident.

What is vitally important IME is what you put in, a good high fibre diet with plenty of fruit and veg along with plenty of liquids is essential and exercise also helps hugely. Once I realised this I was able to drop all the laxatives senna etc and rely on a proper diet which works just sooo much better. A couple of glycerin suppositories (the most gentle sort available), 20 to 30 minutes sat on the throne at a convenient time once every two to 3 days and that's it.

Yeah we're all different and finding what works for you is by far the most important thing, there's a lot of emphasis on routine in rehab and I just wanted to get across that it's not the only way
