| Pity can be a double edged sword when
you are in a wheelchair. On the one hand, disabled people
generally want to be treated as any other member of
society. But then again, they also would like society
in general to have a little more considerartion when
dealing with a disabled person.
Of course, there is a very fine line between being
pitied and being condescened to. This is a problem eveyone
in a wheelchair would of had expeirence of at least
one time or another. This is not generally intentional,
but more a result of the abled bodied person not knowing
how to deal with someone in a wheelchair. This should
be remembered, and to a certain degree accounted for,
but if a discussion does develop, it will soon become
apparent that the disabled are no different to abled
bodied people.
In general though, most abled bodied people who do
have have sympathy towards a wheelchair user, are only
trying to help, and although this can get annoying sometimes,
it should always be remembered, that one day, you may
just need this help which is offered.
