Canadian Wheelchair Sports Association

Who We Are

The Canadian Wheelchair Sports Association (CWSA), founded in 1967, is a national sport organization representing wheelchair athletes.  It is an incorporated, not-for-profit, organization recognized by Sport Canada.

Our Mission

The mission of CWSA is to promote excellence and develop opportunities for Canadians in wheelchair sport.

What We Do

In addition to its role as a developer of elite athletes, CWSA is a national and international voice for Canadian wheelchair athletes.  CWSA also provides a national link for the development of wheelchair athletes and sports, at all levels and in all areas of the country.

Areas of Emphasis:

Sport Management and Governance
CWSA is a national sport organization, as defined and supported by Sport Canada, for the sport of Wheelchair Rugby.

Developmental Leadership
CWSA will facilitate a well-developed, productive feeder system of national team calibre wheelchair athletes.  This includes enabling effective, relevant communication with, and between, provincial members, and supporting the flow of information between provincial members and able-bodied NSO's that have wheelchair sports as part of their mandate.

International Relations
As Canada's member organization in the International Stoke Mandeville Wheelchair Sports Federation, CWSA will sanction and send teams to international competitions and will represent Canada at the ISMWSF.  The Association also facilitates the hosting of quality international events in Canada.

Advocacy
CWSA works to ensure that wheelchair athletes in the able-bodied sport system continue to receive fair and equitable access to high quality sport programs and services.  The Association will work collaboratively to research, evaluate, and report on inclusion and its impact on wheelchair athletes and sports in Canada.

For more information

The Canadian Wheelchair Sports Association has members in nine Canadian provinces.  For complete information on how to get involved in sport in your area, contact your provincial member organization.
